Q: Am I wrong?

My contract is up at the end of the month after 5 years in the same company. They wanted me to sign on again for the same money but with more responsibilities.

I took the manager's note paper and wrote "I quit" and signed and dated it.

Am i wrong?

Depends.

Do you feel like you burnt a bridge you might have liked to cross under slightly different conditions? If so maybe you were wrong... or at least too hasty. You could probably have negotiated better terms if you were happy there.

If you're happy the bridge is gone and you want to move on then I wouldn't stress it.

I do feel it's always better to leave on good terms though if you can.

It was our 3rd meeting about it. They dangled a carrot lat this afternoon. To put me on a special kpi, whatever that means, with a possibility to review it in 6 months. And still they are shocked that i refused their generous pile of horse shit.

Yeah, tough one to answer because only you know all the real particulars of the situation,,,,, but in general, no, you weren't wrong.  If they are too dumb or selfish to recognise your contribution and reward it accordingly, then you certainly were in the right to point it out to them in a very direct manner.  I do the same thing in china,,,  they aren't used to hearing No.  I enjoy telling them direct to their face, a direct, forceful No.  haha, they trip,, they are so used to chinese doing any fucking thing they are told (example below) with not a whimper of protest,,, it's a pleasure telling these fks No.

It was like me at Wall Street, I was there 9 years, they asked and asked and I did and did, and when it came to contract time there was a promotion spot open and 3 of us were in line for this sport and I would have accepted the results because we've been mates for years, buttttt a first year girl younger than us got the job and we asked the HR why? She said shes a "woman" we want more female managers. So all three of us resigned this year. Like diverdude1 said it feels great to say "No" to these guys. The director asked and didn't know that his long term teachers had resigned and when he said he would fix it and promote us it was wayyyyyy too late, we had already gotten our canceled expert certificate, even that he didn't know about and we saw the HR get a talkin~to! Wall Street has the toughest time keeping teachers, you would lose count, we began to make bets how long a teacher would last because it is a lot of work, you'll get burnt out unless you're a coffee engery guy like my mates and myself were.

So yeah you are right, too many good jobs these days with every single foreigner from every type of job from ESL to robotics are leaving or forced to leave due to the ABC policy.

So I think a change will be a breath of fresh air and you'll be more in control with future job changes once you get your Talent card, it'll be easy to change jobs unlike before. So join the club and lets say no to cheap bosses.

iwolf, certainly it is late to considering weather you are or not wrong. Just accept it and go on. Don't look back, otherwise you might be sorry and feel wrong indeed. Get the whole courage you need and find yourself a job elsewhere.

I would have done it a bit differently in the way that I would consider first a job to jump up to, and afterwards have my resignation signed and submitted to the employer. Nevertheless, I understand what being burned feels like and how impulsively need to just throw everything over the window, because you feel enough it's enough.

I learn that prudence is shaped in the oven of this fire. However hot and burning is, mind and heart go stronger through patience.  Yet, I am aware that it is not something easily achieved and so, sometimes, it needs to be wrong, if ever wrong to be right the next time.

Learn from this decision and don't get burnt with regrets anyway. Just move on.

All the best in the new adventure in China.

Thanks Paul. Good advice. No wonder your philosophical books are so popular.

Without knowing the whole story, I would say you were right. 5 years is a long time. These guys will always find a reason. Could be they just didn't want you there anymore. Your usefulness to them may have reached that point. They probably made you that offer just to see what you would say. Maybe they got the desired result. We will never really know. The guy at Wall street must be happy with his new female manageress! I think her usefulness may run out too.

Nope, with China cracking down on ALL VPNs and other news about foreigners in China... I would say it may be a good idea to consider elsewhere.

Don't stay where you're not respected. You're not a local so don't eat shit

Yeah. Exactly true. I have retained a shed or two of dignity.

At least you can watch state of Origin tonight instead of just the high lights

iWolf:

Sadly, i have to stay and eat shit until the end of the month when my contract expires, to do the right thing. At least i won't feel bad about watching state of origin highlights instead of working like a dog

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
