Tripadvisor does a good job of finding the local hot spots in the cities, and nearby attractions.

When it works, Google Maps is amazing, but if you know Mandarin, Baidu Maps is a good alternative when Maps is blocked (which is quite often).

Pleco for translating words and a dictionary.  The OCR software is a bit pricy, but you can use it to scan restaurant menus that have no English to translate the words.  I use it quite a bit.

In addition to the applications above, I use an application called AK Notes.  It allows me to store directions written in Chinese to all of my regular spots.  That way when I get into a taxi, I just show the driver a note in Chinese that tells him exactly where to go.

It really saves a lot of time as I don't have to try and explain things in my bad Chinese.

Xpat.John:

AK Notes is good since it is companioned with a program called Catch.  Catch syncs all my notes on the web.  That way, when I change phones (I am a bit of a phone whore) I can easily have all my notes transferred to my new phone.
