Q: Any tips on dealing with mosquitos?

I sleep with a net over my bed but I always seem to wake up with more bites every morning. Any ideas to help me out? Not bed bugs or anything like that.

Plug-in anti-mosquito insence saved my life this summer. It really works wonders for me. The actual plug in device costs around 25 rmb and you have to buy the insence squares seperately for around 15 rmb. It's an investment very well spent. Before going to bed, plug it in and you won't get any bother. Just make sure to put in a new insence the next day.

Xpat.John:

It depends on where you are. Here in Guangzhou, there are still mosquitos running around.

Wow! I'm not the only one who found a mosquito in my room in November! I'm not alone!

Give the room a deadly spray then leave for a few hours!

Normally, I just use a net.  But that net gets a detailed inspection before I turn out the lights just to make sure none snuck in with me.

But the trick I normally use is to turn on the AC to around 25.  That normally makes it too cold for the blood suckers to go hunting.

The little machine with the rectangular-sized packets does indeed kill mosquitos but it also places a considerable amount of rather noxious chemicals into the air, some of which can cause harm to the hepatatic functions of the immune system.  If you do indeed use these machines, as I do, please make sure that you have windows (with screens on them) open in your apartment.

Additionally, there are two other remedies available, less toxic.

Firstly, purchase one of these low-frequency UV lights that are available. If you place that in your room during the evening, that will alleviate most of the problem.

Secondly, as strange as this may sound, mosquitos have an aversion to vinegar.  During the high of the mosquito season, I place some drops of 9.5 vinegar on my major pulse points of the body.  It does help.

Use the spray they use the spray in thailand since they have many mosquitos there too. You can try turning on the light and attract them to go to one spot and kill as many as you can. Or you can get something that may eat mosquitos but not sure what it is. Either way a spray can to kill the mosquitos would be effective.

derek:

"Get something to eat them"..."or spray them" .....solid tips. hehe Mattayya, that curve ball didn't break at all. I had to hit it.

and yes, Avon products are readily available in China.  They are considered top-of-the-line beauty products here, believe it or not.

Weird question first, but hearme out.  Do you have cats?

I suppose it doesn't really matter, but it will kill 2 birds with one stone if you do!

Plant some small herb pots of catnip and place them on your window sills of anywhere near an opening that mosquitoes might come in.

The oil in catnip is about 10 times more effective than DEET in repelling mosquitoes.  They HATE it and will stay far from it.  The added bonus is that if you have cats, well, you have a lot of catnip and your cats will help spread the oils around and it will keep those buggers away from your cats too.

Seeds are available at a lot of pet shops and markets.

Marigolds also work well.  Get a few flower pots and plant some near windows.  They are really easy to take care of and keep mosquitoes away like crazy.

Rosemary, garlic and basil also repel mosquitoes.

You best bit is to have ALL of these growing around various windows.  I grow small pots of herbs in my kitchen year round.  Take a garlic bulb, drop it in a small glass of water, and it will shoot out long green stems (which you can eat) and a small pot with rosemary and one for basil.  If I need herbs for cooking, I have some and they keep bugs away.  I grow catnip in my "sun room" and on window sills, and in the summer, I drop marigolds  near my bigger windows (they have like a 3 meter range of effectiveness).  Marigold will keep all kinds of stuff away EXCEPT for butterflies.  Expect to see a lot of those, but I don't think that's a problem UNLESS you have pollen allergies...  These will release pollen after butterflies come and visit (if they can get inside).

9819 also mentionned vinegar, which does work to an extent.  The best thing to do there though is if there is standing water near your place, dump some vinegar in there so mosquitoes won't breed in it.

Try these out, they really do work and you won't be filling up your apartment with toxic chemicals.  They require a little bit of work, but not much.  They are all easy plants to grow.  Even if you don't have cats, catnip works wonders.  Good luck!

Make it fun and buy the Mosquito tennis racket that fries them with electricity when you hit then. Otherwise they sell mosquito repelling lights on taobao. And then there are the more traditional methods of scenting yourself with citronella oil or getting a mosquito net. You gotta hate the little blood suckers. Hope the se suggestions are helpful...smiley

I had a mosquito in my room...in February. Mosquitos have always loved me, and no joke, I have at least 8 bites on my left ankle alone. I have more bites than that, all happening within an hour. For now I try to wear a long sleeved jacket outside when it starts to get dark out, and avoid sitting in the grass in some shade during the afternoon. They usually don't come in my house, and if I see it I kill it. I should really buy one of those zapper rackets Matt mentioned. They look fun.
