Q: Anyone else had trouble transferring money with Western Union?

I spent all day trying to get Christmas money sent from my family and the workers argued with me over foreigners having more than 2 names, needing to see an actual invoice from the sender and other nonsense. Can anyone give me some tips or share experiences?

I do it on line, a link from my banking. I don't need to fill in my name then. I have had trouble with her name, last name Lin is written as last name, not first like in Chinese.

beaufortninja, I can only assume that perhaps you might be working through on of the Western Union branches located within one of the China Post Office stations.  They are a hit-and-miss affair.

For about the last year or so, the Bank of China has implemented a relatively hassle-free Money-Gram type money transfer.  It is relatively hassle-free and the cash arrives in US dollars (for conversion or for pick up) often within 10 minutes.  It is actually cheaper than Western Union and functions a lot the same. You need to find the main Bank of China branch in the city or town where you live.  Originally many of the foreigners where I live used Western Union previously but now the majority have switched to the B of C.

I haven't tried to receive money using Western Union before, I've only sent.  Even sending from China can be a bit "ma fan".  I usually end up using the USA based website, and even then may have to try more than once to get it to go through.  I found that using my bank's online bill pay (same as Ted above) works better than trying to get it to accept my credit card.

Doesn't western union have some option to send directly to a person's bank account?  If so, surely that'd be better than having to deal with any incompetent folks in person.
