Q: Anyone here ever had a full-blown meltdown?

As in the gibbering breakdown kind or maybe just an explosion of pent-up aggression that on reflection may have been over the top and excessive. I've known a few people lose it here that wouldn't have gone so overboard in their behaviour back home, it can happen to anyone. But has it ever happened to you?

No, never! Apparently, I have very strong 'central nervous system'. I am never seasick. When everybody on the ship is looking into the plastic bags during rough sea, I don't feel any different than when smooth sailing. So, 'meltdown' can't occur that easy.angel

not me, but there was this foreigner here about 2 years ago who lost it on everybody.  he was bullied by the expats and had a terrible situation at his school.  i'm not too sure what happened exactly, but he ended up getting physical with a few of the chinese staff members at his school, then ran out of work.  later he showed up at a restaurant a few of us were at and started threatening and yelling at us for no reason, talking about how he wanted us to die.  i had never talked to him before that night.  a few days later i heard he was deported.  his school told him they were going to get some paperwork done, when he got out of the car he was at the airport and all his bags were packed for him.  the police were there to send him off.

ScotsAlan:

How long had he been here before his episode?

I suspect 2 years.

I snapped once. A particularly douche taxi driver got into a dispute with my gf at the time. Called her a laowai pucking whore. I snapped and tried to kill him. he ran out of the taxi and stopped 200 meters away screaming the most horrible things possible.

Ive never snapped like that in my life. He wasnt within reach but his taxi was. Every window, mirror, light was kicked or punched out while he watched. Every fender and panel was dented to hell, when the cops finally came i was standing on the hood kicking in the windshield.

Long night in the cop shop that day.... i thought for sure id be deported, yet i remain!

perhaps but not much else could be done. I got one final laugh at the end of the night after all the negotiating and threats and me refusing and challenging them to deport me i got off with a warning and a settlement of 200 rmb. And i got to watch the police tell him he was only getting 200 and made him sign the waiver. So it all ended on a sweet note

Man, seems you are a kind off mind reader.

I am more and more dangerous to my surrounding. just, you know, the minivan on sidewalk honking and trying to kill me with my son, lovely morning situation. I grow about 5 times in size and become green/red monster ... the minivan than stop and wait in fear ...

Or that asshole who is spitting in a kindergarten on the stairs have to listen to some nice czech words...

Or my wife crying for the mobile, which have accelerate from 0 to 300 within 1 second, smashed the glass with beer can on table and hit the wall, after few nice words coming out of her mouth. I din't clean the floor well. So lets make some real mess, don't ya think ?

And, .. okay, enough today. need learn for interview tomorrow.

I want that job, but don't want to do it here, in China. shall i press the boss move the whole facility to Europe ?

Yup. In a McDonalds, about 2 months ago.

I was being pestered by some "hello" kids and got a bit annoyed. Done a full standup speech in front of everyone about the failings of the Chinese education system. My volume was increasing when I got started on about manners and respect for others.

A couple of cool Chinese guys told the kids to feck off and calm was restored. I thanked them and ate my burger.

For the next 2 weeks I avoided the internet...... I was terrified that a mate would phone me to say I was on China smack.

I lost it in Thailand once.  You old guys might can remember when the international airport was still Don Muang.  I came in on a flight from NA and landed at that shit-hole Suvarnabhumi or whatever it is.  I had to take public transpo over to DM to get a bus for Isan, and I was jet-lagged to the 3rd degree. Well, it was the middle of the night, and I missed my stop near DM. When I realised it, I lost it.  I kept yelling at driver to stop and let me off,  he wouldn't, as is his right.  I fkng kicked the door and broke the glass.  Well, let me tell you, this is scary back then.  He pulled into one of the roads into DM and up came the MP's.  In case you don't know, DM was/is also a quasi-military airport and is guarded by the Thai military.  I was very scared. It kept flashing thru my mind that these dudes were gonna 'disappear' me. Easy enough to do back then...

Then one of the strangest things that has ever happened in my life happened. They fucking helped me!! They got me to a bus for Isan. They just fuckin' helped me!  I was a total dick who only deserved an ass-whuppin', but they helped me.  They darn sure did not have to, but they did.  well, call God what u like,,, but it reaffirmed my belief in God (the basic goodness of mankind) that night.

Every time I get into a taxi in Hangzhou I experienced  anger spasm. Those taxi drivers enjoy driving me around like 'Ms. Daisy'...only problem with that is, when they eventually reached my stop they have gone over my taxi budget and more, much, much more. So I try to avoid taxi as much as I possible can.

I met this one guy that used to hummm to the computer (in the office) and then go outside to pet and talk to leaves on surrounding trees.

Another guy told everyone ghosts lived in his light bulbs so he was scared to turn them on and see the ghost's face... he turned into a total recluse and was deported home.

Both were ESL teachers in China. Does this qualify lol?

Not me, but my BF did. To this day, I'm not 100% sure exactly what happened to cause it, but I was feeling a bit sick one day so he went off to an expat-hosted party by himself. There was some girl there who was apparently being extremely obnoxious - trashing his home country and talking about how Uyghur people were sub-human and should be kept in camps for the safety of their 'betters' (her words, obviously, not mine) and that.... triggered.... badness...

By the time he got home he was in an incandescent state of rage, yelling, screaming, breaking things. I hid the knives for both our safety, and I was terrified both of and for him, which I had never been before. He's normally super mellow.

In the morning, he didn't remember a thing. Thankfully, all the stuff he broke was ours/easily replaceable, so we had no awkward explanations to the landlord, and in our apartment building screaming at unholy times of the night was a normal event, so I didn't feel bad for the neighbors. That day does not rate as a highlight in my travels, though, it must be said.

Hulk:

Wow. Yeah, alcohol can really cause extra pissiness. I'd be angry, too. That's my secret, actually; I'm always angry.

Alcohol doesn't help when you're upset, that's true, but there are plenty of nights when we go out that don't end in screaming meltdowns, so I can't blame the alcohol in this case.

When the landlord tried to raise our rent 100 kuai a month. We were six months into a year lease and I just snapped... the principle of it and all. I stormed down to the real estate office, with my wife begging me the whole time not to go (She was scared I'd would be beaten up by all the real estate agents). I considered it a lesson she had to learn about not be pushed around, as so many Chinese willingly allow, and she had calmed me out of my rage by the time I got there and I promised to let her do the talking. I sat there simmering and at one point he raised his voice to her and stood up and I said loudly in English, "You better sit the F*ck down RIGHT now!" and I burned holes into his face with my eyes as my wife translated it to him. He knew I wasn't to be tested at that moment and did exactly what he was told. In the end the rent stayed the same and they didn't mess with us again and probably never rented to another laowai.

I am thankful it was a long walk to the place though. If it were downstairs I probably would have assaulted someone. I don't think I've ever lost it like that and over something so small...but the thing about snapping is that it comes after one thing too many.

My wife and I take turns calming each other down.

She gets really mad at stupid workers, I tell her... what do you expect? If they were rocket scientists they would be working with the Chinese Space Program not at KFC. She goes too far and is like a foreigner trying to cure all Chinese of their ignorance and poor customer service.

I get mad when someone pushes it above arguing and starts to possibly think about getting physical. That's when I step in but no one had actually gotten physical with me, they only lightly suggested at it. When I hit that anger point... and it is hard to hit... I feel like raging burning demon bent on the destruction of that person... But I am still not stupid, I wait for them to tip the iceberg by assaulting me first... but they never do. I think people can tell that someone is genuinely dangerous when they appear calm but their eyes are burning and just begging for you to push it a little further so they can take you apart and feel no remorse afterward.

I did, I raced a guy for a parking spot and he got really pissed out, we both got out ready to fight, but my Chinese wife begged me to stop and not to swing a punch at him, and before I knew it he had his fist slug my head, didn't really hurt just pissed the hell out of me, but my wife kept saying: No No, you're a foreigner, police won't help you, but the police will help you IF you don't hit him.

So we moved far enough away to take an iPhone video of the man trying to hit me and his car number and took it to the police and my wife was right, we won the case after 6 hours in the police station.

My wife is right for all of us, we really have to watch our reactions and revenge feelings in China, we all want to win, but my wife said always think of the family first..

It was a life lesson for me and good anger management control. Because now I have and had to control myself. Chinese guys are angry dudes.

I should add the risks of fighting a Chinese guy, if this man knows the area of where you live or your car, if one Chinese man can't beat you, they will call up their friends, yes gang-up punk friends are normal in China, thats why my wife waited for 6 hours in the Police station for that crazy a** to sign a paper stating he wouldn't try to harm us and accept a criminal record on his Hukou, we didn't accept his money offer, we preferred him to have a record on his Hukou., IF a gang up happened he would be held responsible even if he wasn't there.

expatlife26:

Good story, sorry you had to go through that. You are 100% right about Chinese guys and fighting. You'll see two grown men screaming at each other while trying to phone their friends to the scene to make it a gang beatdown. If you're that mad, throw a goddamn punch. Back home in the morning you wake up with a shiner, feel a little foolish and go about your business. Not here though. Chinese guys have neither honor nor courage, fortunately that is also our greatest advantage against them.

Ironman you are right on the money and you made the smartest choice if not the instinctual "Alpha Male" choice.

Chinese are EXTREMELY vengeful and can't let things go easily. Chances are that man would have made things a lot worse if given the resources. Just curious, how much money did he offer?

Most Chinese men are VERY cowardly... of all the stories I have heard or seen of foreigners getting attacked, (even Chinese on Chinese) or in fights with Chinese none of them were just one on one... and this is in the double or triple digits.

Yes, they always call up friends and friends will be more than happy to come if it involves ganging up on a foreigner. You see Chinese are also afraid of the punishment. They would rather share (collective community) it and then hopefully beat the wrap rather than taking it all alone. One person's life in China means nothing for the most part... but a small group raiding a police station demanding action can change the course of punishment.

Another thing you can do, is try to bribe the police. You probably have to speak Chinese or get your wife to do it but Chinese police make practically nothing and would prefer to befriend people who can help them out like a foreigner (teach their kids English or help them with forms for their kid to study abroad, help them gain face as a foreign buddy, even a foreign drinking buddy, sound stupid but I have seen it) than some idiot angry Chinese guy.

That's how China works and foreigners do have a distinct advantage in this area as long as you don't act like a total idiot and end up in the media. You just have to be a little cunning and know the right people.

Glad to hear you didn't take his money...nice to see somebody stand on principles. I agree the cowardice really bothers me...just no sense of right and wrong only who wins. I don't see where they get off being so vengeful either, it's not like they give a shit about their reputations or they wouldn't throw tantrums like that.
