Q: Are drivers required to buy car insurance in China?

What does it cover?

How much does it cost?

Where do you buy it?

Can foreigners get it?

1. Yes, car insurance is required in China.

2. Cost is dependent upon the vehicle to be insured and the driver's record.  Just as an example, I pay about 3000 rmb/year for a BYD F0 after 1 year of incident free driving in China.  For me, this is more than I would expect to pay in the US for a similarly valued car.  But then again I have many more years of incident free driving experience in the US.

3. Covers the same things as insurance elsewhere....collision, liability, comprehensive, medical costs...with individual limits on each.

4. There are many companies that sell auto insurance in China.  Two of the larger companies are China Pacific and Ping An.

5. Yes, foreigners can buy auto insurance.

ambivalentmace:

yes my insurance on a new toyota in Georgia with clean record, married, CDL, and car alarm and lojack, and ex military with USAA was 630 dollars a year, but I haven't had a chargeable accident in 30 years and I hire a lawyer every time to keep moving violations of my MVR. I did get bumped up to 900 a year when i stopped slumming and starting driving a red lexus convertible, but after I got a new wife, I put the car in her name and her insurance and let her pay for it, yes, I am a real prick.

one type of insurance is mandatory, costs around 2000 rambos per year.

Hotwater:

Price varies and 2000 is very low! I have a small 1.3L Chinese car and my insurance is about 2800/year - though that might also include some car tax payment. Bigger/more expensive cars cost more....
