For Valentine's my gf went to the hair salon earlier in the day. During dinner at one point, I complimented her on the cut and she said it had cost 1,200 RMB. I pay 10 RMB for my haircuts, and though I obviously don't expect it to be that little for women, my jaw still dropped.
Are these prices typical?
Recently, my GF wanted some pampering, and I agreed to pay for it (in a fair exchange of "wants") and to accompany her, she did not wanted to be alone with all those queers (so she said).
Well, she got massages from head to toe, then her long hair was washed and tinted as she wanted, then waved using the old style of rolls with heat applied by a circle above her head with a bunch of hanging wires and they hook up on each roll. Oh, her hair was cut some, just to make it even length all over. Then she got the fingernails done, and toe nails painted too (besides cutting all).
It was like a 4 and 1/2 hours affair, I was going nuts without a thing to do but look. And the total price was 435 Rmb. I am not an expert on beauty saloons or their cost, but back home you can't even get a massage only for less than $ 100 minimum. So I would say here are cheaper
No those prices aren't typical. A haircut in Tony & Guy costs around 300 RMB here (depending on which level hairdresser you choose) which is about the same as prices back home. The cheapest cuts at Tony Studio are 180 RMB which is definitely cheaper than in the UK, considering it's a fairly upmarket hair studio. But you can also get cuts for 30 RMB including wash and blow dry so if you don't want to spend much money, you don't have to.

I do not know where you get your hair cut, but locally I can get a decent one at the local open air market for 3 Rmb, and if I want my hair wash before and after haircut it will be 20 Rmb, with a scalp massage too.
And that is a normal barber shop, no other business allowed there.
