Q: Are the journalists compromised?

in my exciting life I often watch the CCTV news.  I've just done that and found their report into a couple of stories to be less than objective.

Giving air to Al-Assad's election victory in Syria doesn't seem balanced.  Japan not being mentioned as part of the G7 meeting seems juvenile.  But worse was giving big air to Putin's assessment of US over-involvement in world affairs.  According to Putin, Russia's annexation of Crimea is nothing other than their right,  and has become problematical only because of protestations from other countries...and, according to CCTV, particularly from the USA.  Putin thinks the US cramps his style and CCTV are very happy to emphasize this view.

So do you think CCTV news journalists have any editorial input at all?  If so, then are they being objective?

If not, then does that mean their journalistic integrity is compromised?

I think its definitely compromised.  Im sure journalists would love to report true balanced ideas. But on the other hand. Chinese dont have a passion for anything. This is why nearly 100% of doctors will give people poison to make a couple extra bucks. Nothing is sacred to the chinese. So If I had to guess, most journalists just do it because its a job and it pays for the iphone. They dont give a shit.

As far as the anti-american sentiment. Well, china shares that view. So for them to push Putins agenda only validates their own views.  A "we are not the only ones! " attitude.

Too be fair, American media does the same thing , though I would argue to a lesser degree.  None of us know enough about the island disputes to really have an opinion. And i find it really unlikely that china is in the right in EVERY CASE EVER DISPUTED!!!!!  but also, are they wrong everytime too?   But you dont see much more than American reports of  China using their power to antagonize the world.

Also , why if a bomb goes off in every other country America screams terrorism, they love that, yet are very careful to use the word increasingly sparingly when china has an attack?

Perhaps its their own subtle propaganda? Like China deserves for that to happen?

Or we constantly hear Americans rail about Chinas human rights record?  When although not great, and im not comparing to america, its gotta be better than,  what? half? Half of the other countries on earth?  Yet you dont hear jack about them.

Capital punishment is the other. China kills everyone. Yes America isnt far behind.

I dont know, being from Canada I have learned to trust no media at all.  Its all depressing. Im going to watch a cartoon.

Are you actually suggesting a debate over CCTV journalists having integrity or not?

royceH:

No, not as such.  I was just asking a question about whether or not people think they have any.

Umm...yes, yes I am.

All media in China is controlled by the state.  By definition, this compromises them.  Also, as mike stated, most media everywhere is compromised by the human factor.  Humans are just not trustworthy news sources.  Small news medias are easily swayed by one person's opinion. Large media conglomerates are puppets of the advertisers and sponsors.  Unless you are a personal eyewitness, you will be getting a biased view based on someone's agenda.

Agreeing with mike again,  I rather just watch a cartoon with my daughter.

Truly unbiased journalism is very rare. It is tragic few countries that has a constitution strong enough to allow full freedom of press.

According to Hollywood, bad things can happen to journalists in the US if something severely undermining the president is reported. I hope that is just in the movies, but you can never know.

Surely there must be some organization that tracks freedom of speech across the glove.

RiriRiri:

"All power in the People's Republic of China belongs to the people"

"The state organs of the People's Republic of China apply the principle of democratic centralism."

"All citizens of the People's Republic of China are equal before the law."

"Citizens of the People's Republic of China enjoy freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly, of association, of procession and of demonstration."

"The residences of citizens of the People's Republic of China are inviolable. Unlawful search of, or intrusion into, a citizen's residence is prohibited."

Seems like people think journalism is about nothing other than an exercise in chasing the light.

Any journos out there?

I used to write for the Global Times when I first came to China. When I wrote something that was pro-China I was praised and the there was very little editing. If I wrote something negative however, let's say about the growing water pollution crisis, I was told to "tone down the criticism" and my article would be edited to inlclude a few lines about the "great progress" being made to enforce pollution laws and some quote from a leader I never even heard of.  As time passed my own words were reduced by about 30% and replaced with the editor's - to the point where I did not want my name on the article. After 4 months of this I moved on.  Objectivity in news reporting is not a priority in China.

The issue of bias is different in China than the west...in the west one can always turn to alternative (even crazy like coast-to-coast AM) news. In countries like China, alternative news is seriously crushed...

-Here is a case in point, remember how the west kept talking about Russia's poor treatment of homosexuals but in 2008, a country that violates all standards of human rights was awarded the olympic games with people saying "China has arrived". Gay rights have become the Dreyfus affair of the American media...Notice once the US was NOT going to attack Syria, the Civil War there became not news any more? Of course, anybody who wants to can read anything they want online...unless they live in a country like this one...

Trick question, there are no Chinese journalists, there are just mouthpieces for the CCP. Don't devalue the work of real journalists by calling these lap dogs for the leaders.

C'mon Ririririririr: you omitted some of the text!

"All power in the People's Republic of China belongs to the people...the people who have the power"

"The state organs of the People's Republic of China apply the principle of democratic centralism. If you're anything but centric, or worse, eccentric, well, f-you, buddy"

"All citizens of the People's Republic of China are equal before the law (light-assault weapon)."

"Citizens of the People's Republic of China enjoy freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly, of association, of procession and of demonstration as long as it is against another people, culture, religion or country."

"The residences of citizens of the People's Republic of China are inviolable. Unlawful search of, or intrusion into, a citizen's residence is prohibited unless you are wearing something blue somewhere on your person, in that case, go nuts.."

I think the situation is basically if you write something the CCP likes then it's no problem getting it published.  If you write something the CCP doesn't like, then you need to keep changing it until it is something they do like.  That's China for you.

The black savior's legacy, journalists are worse than spies and deserve monitoring for national security, but it's ok if a democrat is running the country. no worries.

A Chinese journalist slapping and assaulting someone at a conference in Britain, I guess this is allowed in China.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
