Q: Are we too paranoid about the safety of Chinese food?

I have been reading through loads of questions on this website and have heard some very frightening stories about all sorts of things from farmers doing indecent things to their crops, to tap water having brain cell destroying chemicals in it. I know some of it has been on the news, but where does the rest come from? Should I really be that worried whenever I eat ANYTHING in China? Where is the proof or is it all hearsay?

Open your eyes, and your mind, and you will see the result as directly and some 10 years later. many info is just compilation of puzzle pieces ... and when you compile those puzzle together, real info, eye contact and your common sense, the result will beat your imagination

Why is it that the one group of people that manage to keep food safety in China within reasonable perspectives are food quality and safety related professionals? I know many such people, indeed I am one, both Chinese and international. We all have our concerns. We all realize the undoubted problems that exist here. But we are able to keep things in perspective. The media reports one side of the story. That is the only side that the vast majority of people hear. It would be like courtrooms where the only evidence is presented by the prosecution and the verdict is predetermined. If you want a balanced view provided by suitable independent professionals, you should peruse the publication "Advancing Food  Safety in China" published in March 2008 by the UN. It is freely available in PDF version online. Again I want to emphasize that this is not a wholesale defence of China re: food safety. The problems are well documented.

While the food quality is not the best, and people do get sick (and worse!) I dont think it is quite as bad as we think it is. After all, we are still alive and we eat it every day....

Difference is IF I develop cancer tomorrow I will have lived 50 happy and carefree years; you however will have lived (if you were the same age) 50 years full of paranoia and fear and have virtually the same risk of cancer. I know which option I prefer.

You are probably wrong. I might not be paranoiac. I am aware of the dangers of Chinese food and thus avoid them. I buy imported food and get vegetables from foreigners who grow organic.

that basically the reason i try to cook everyday at home. considering that 3/4 of water in china is polluted, along with the underground water and soil there is just to hope that my gene would make the difference: being born and raised untill the age of 24 in  rural italy....

God or Buddha bless us.
