Q: availability of solid handcrafted wood furiture in china

As u know I make solid handcrafted custom made wood furniture only as a hobby I have sold a few items and made furniture for myself and others So in china do they have small privately owned woodworking furniture shops that make solid wood [no particle board] custom handmade [ no assembly line] quality furniture in china? If so, what type or pieces of furniture [ chairs tables chests desks cabinets] what types of wood [oak cherry pine maple walnut ] are very popular and in high demand?

As you say Cub, they probably do exist but I don't remember seeing anything like that.

Your best bet would be to ask a Chinese friend to get online and see what they can find.

the closest I've personally seen to cottage furniture is a couple of small carpentry shops with some decorative carvings on the pieces.
look up cctv 9 documentarys and you may find something there.

I've seen a few small workshops that make anything from bamboo ladders to beds & bookshelves. All real wood but nothing fancy. Just furniture for daily life. They've always been tucked away in the older parts of Guangzhou. I'd guess there are also places that make really good quality stuff but finding them would need local knowledge and the ability to  speak/read Chinese.

There are still some carpenters in the countryside, they use the local wood to make some simple furniture ,wardrobe, table, chair etc.

and in the cities some people want custom-made fixed furniture for the special size of their new apartment, normally its wardrobe installed into the wall, and also bookcase or computer table. They use plywood or MDF.

In some high end furniture factory, for example hotel furniture or US style furniture ,part of the furnitures are handmade like the carving ,gold/silver leaf etc. They use expensive hardwood.

oak ,walnut ,cherry etc are mainly from US ,you can only find the materials  the furniture manufacturing cities...

most people cant afford solid wood furniture...as you can see even in the high end furniture mall ,most of of the furnitures are the plywood/mdf  with melamine, better one would be plywood/mdf +wood veneer...

one piece of furniture should be not a problem unless its really rare wood. you can declare it as a gift or a sample...can send by DHL/UPS etc but it's gonna be expensive for the carrier fee since its heavy.

The answer is yes - as others above have said.

AS much as we all like to dump shit on China and the quality of Chinese products, there are those people who actually carry on various handiwork traditions, and give a damn about the quality of their products.

I don't think they'll be extremely difficult to find, but they may not be local to where you are. And, as also said above, may not be cheap!

In China, you can buy anything if you have enough money. And, yes, that does actually include 'quality'!

cub:

shining, the reason the ones who make quality items and care about thier work as i also do is because they have and take thier time making thier/our furniture it takes time and patience not rushed like on a ssembly line like the big furniture factories do! Its like quality over quantity!

There are plenty!! I dont know why others havent seen them. Great varieties of wood, too. Fujian is famous for traditional Chinese furniture, especially tables. One year I was shopping for a custom made table from my own design and I stumbled upon a ton of taobao shops selling solid wood THICK for incredible prices. There was also a local craftsman or four in my small 9th tier city that made impressive hand carved dragon tables that I wanted to buy for our school. We decided to move the school to our home, so I didn't buy one. In every big city I have visited, there has been a craftsman market. Just be warned that they are almost always traditional Chinese designs and creative lattitude is very narrow. They dont know how to venture outside their niche, so everything looks similar.
