Just curious.... because of all the pollution and such. Is the Chinese average life expectancy much lower than in "the west"?
Also curious if urban Chinese life expectancy is higher than rural.

In research the Chinese life expectancy is much higher than in the west. The reasons for this is because Chinese eat a lot of vegetables and they have to walk around a lot. They get plenty of exercise and enough good foods to keep them healthy and living longer. On the other hand in western countries such as America fast food is the norm and an average American will consume over 100 hamburgers and hotdogs a year. Most Americans drive and many do not exercise. America is not the most obese nation in the world but it's not the least obese nation in the world. As far as rural and urban there should be a huge difference as the city you would have higher rates of pollution because of all the traffic. Wherever there is less pollution I would say that the life expectancy should increase with the balance of good foods and exercise. Hope that helps!

You went through all that effort not to give an actual answer. Congratulations on wasting everyone's time.
The most recent WHO figures (2009) give life expectancy of 74 years for China and 79 for the USA (here). However, life expectancy for both countries is increasing (in 2000 the figures were 71 for China and 77 for the USA). Note, these figure are average life expectancies at birth for both sexes.

Yea that's the expectancy at birth. After they get old it is how you took care of yourself that matters. That's why the chinese life expectancy is higher than the west.
beetle:
I think life expectancy at birth is a valid comparator for these two countries as both have a relatively low infant mortality rate.

life expectancy from birth to death, what else is it supposed to be?
Interestingly, rates for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are also higher than mainland PRC (#80)... HK being ranked at #2 in the world, and Macau at #9. (FTR, Australia comes in at #6 in the world )
About 3 mins in my home town if they act like they do here.
