Q: Best place in China you have visited?

I have traveled to many places in China. I think the best place I have visited was a 5 day cruise on the Yangtze River. Although, I really liked Wuxi in Jiangsu Province too. I was not a huge fan of Guilin. Future trips to Inner Mongolia and Macau are places I look forward to in the coming vacation periods.

What is the best place you have visited in China. Why?

I keep going back to Yangshou for some reason.  I like it.

Yup, it's a tourist place, but when I am a tourist I like places to be touristy.

I get "real" china every day wink.  When I go on holiday I want "fake" China, so I can escape real China

yongge:

+1 for Yangshuo.  The whole area is beautiful and it is really nice to rent a bicycle and ride out into the countryside, next to canals.

Dali in Yunnan is good too.

Dunhuang, for the amazing landscapes in the various sites, and the painted caves with the Buddha. The town itself is very enjoyable, and have some nice food.

meiduo:

Definitely I will go there again! I forgot to bring my glasses last time.mingshashan is good too!

What, so it can be filled with foreigners?  No thanks, not going to ruin it like that.

RandallFlagg:

That's somehow worse than a place being filled with Chinese tourists?

Well, it is one if the few "undiscovered" places in China, for now, so there aren't really very many Chinese tourists there, just locals.

Macau is okay for a day or two....then you run out of places to go, unless you like throwing money away in casinos

As cities go I'd say Dalian is my favorite that I've visited so far. It's clean, developed and scenic with numerous attractions. Great seafood too.

I got a kick outta that Wall...   dumb answer I know, but still...

my goal though is to bike across the Takla Makan...   Kashgar to Turfan ~ sponsored by somebody like Nike, Giant or Trek.

royceH:

Seems you'd have to be mad to do that.  I had planned to drive across it during upcoming Spring Festival and the wife nearly had a fit.  She said it's too dangerous for driving so presumably that would be moreso for a bike ride.  That said, I'd like to ride it too.

Realities to consider, the danger (if it's real) notwithstanding, are that nightly stopovers won't come with simple pleasures such as water, toilet, shower, food, and so on.

But if you can bag some sponsorship good luck to ya!  Let me know and I'll turn up and give you a cheer.

One thing you might be able to look forward to is a decent bottle of dry white when you get to Turpan.

thx for the comment.  I did a very rough analysis (route, provisions, consumption,km per day goals/destination, permits, etc.) and determined it is definitely doable using a bike trailer to carry consumables.  But I had a spot of bad luck last year, broke my knee.  So, as u can imagine, everything is on hold.  If I do manage to attempt it I will definitely be posting all about it here on EC.

yeah, I thought about the dangers too (nutcases who don't like other people), I figure they are real. kinda like tossing the dice though and not something I would let deter me from trying.

My original answer was rubbish....drunk & thought I was replying to another answer.

One of of my favorite places recently was in Yunnan. Small old town called Shaxi Guzhen. Old centre was still old widen houses around a nice square. It was venting developed as a tourist town but looked to being done sympathetically. Hoping it doesn't get ruined by hoards of locals & big hotels.

The Stone Forest about an hour's drive out of Kunming is well worth a visit.  You'll need a few hours to walk all around and through it so that'll take up more than half your day.

And Dali, also in Yunnan, is fantastic, especially hours and hours spent in Bad Monkey.  Best beer in China.  (I mean what they brew themselves, not the local drop which is shockingly weak.)

Hot natural outdoor springs half way up the snow covered mountain just west of ShaTan in Xinjiang.

I'm hoping that in a cpl of weeks I'll be able to add Kashgar to this small list.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
