I've read a bunch of information about VPN's. Is it best to buy once in China or should I buy it prior to leaving? If there is someone who won't mind messaging me about what they consider the best one to get I'd appreciate it.

Before! Do it now! Because VPN websites are well-evidently banned, and if you don't get a VPN from outside you'll be pretty much screwed.
how is everyone thats in China who gets around the Great China firewall using to do it?
Either, get a reputable one now (before), or sign up for a free one now, and then look for a good one that you KNOW will get past the wall.
The only real problem in buying before (without advice from this side) is that you may get something that doesn't do the job properly from this side.
I tried for 3 months straight when I first arrived in China to download and install a VPN.....with no success...always get blocked. You need to get it, download, install and test it before you arrive. Then it's just one or two clicks here and voila!
In my experience you are better off with well know big name VPN's that cost money. You get what you pay for and the more money the better the service.
If you are still interested in finding a good one, then message me and I will reply with the one I use, but I WILL NOT say it here.

No offense to you in any way, but I got mine pretty quick, easy and painless. It is also paid for, and any issues, I've been able to email out to get rectified. And, IIRC, I just did a search on the net to find a reputable one - so it wasn't about knowing the best beforehand. Maybe just luck?? I also will NOT mention it's name here....
I am in china where facebook/twitter/youtube blocked, i tried several other VPNs before come to Strong VPN, i am very satisfied with strongvpn, I am on travelling with in china, so i might use different ISPs, i was just hesitate to order because of some VPNs can not bypass some ISPs But StrongVPN is performing very well in all ISP i have tested in china, without compensating the Speed forget to mention Great after sales service, Do not use Bittorrent when strongvpn is connected, this may lead to permanently block the service without refund
As I'm living in China and Also in Middle east countiries,I'm a specialist in finding new ways to access blocked websites. I have tried all those softwares, hotspot shieled, vpn one click, or,....They are good but not good enough, I think you'd better use a paid vpn service, But before you pay for it, ask them to give you a free trial account at least for 1 day.and then you can decide which one is better provider.I compared many providers. Strong vpn, hide my ass, purevpn and saturnvpn. They are all offering almost the same service, but saturnvpn is really cheap, and the support is really patient and helpful. You know 1month for $3.3 is not too much. you can also but an account for 12 months for $16 and 6MOnths for $10satunvpn.com has free test account and you can try that,(http://saturnvpn.com/free-test-account/) You can also ask them to give you a free trial account for 1 or 3 days.I hope it could help you to get rid of all those restrictions.

Nope, I tried Saturnvpn and the service was the worst I've ever come across. Kept dropping out on me, the customer service was non-existent & they never replied to any of my concerns! Don't use them!
download as many vpns and proxies as you can find on torrents before you come to china and see what works for you, trying to get them here may cause you to cuss and wake up the whole building like i did.
before, e.g. my provider, you can get to their web site, but not the download/setup section.
Oh come on guys, you can do better than this! A spammer resurrects a dead topic & you all answer seriously! I was expecting loads of sarcasm...,.
