Sign up with Google Sign up with FacebookQ: Buying Chinese-made Fender guitars
Although I was planning to be over in China by now, I've put it off for a few months to save some extra funds.
In the meantime I've been doing some research - some allegedly low-quality Fender guitars (such as the Marauder, which I would like to purchase at some point) are made in China. I was wondering whether it would be cheaper to wait until I am in China itself (and save myself the extra airline baggage costs) before I buy the guitar or am I better off getting one now? I would be planning to use it while I was in China instead of bringing over my more expensive model.
Do you think it may be the same as the price of iPhones / iPads (produced in China but considerably more expensive in the country anyway)? Or will it be cheaper to buy while I'm over? I'm in no rush to buy it, I've already got one I am happy with but it is a model I would like to own in the future.
I know the Chinese-made guitars are considered inferior, however I really like the Fender Marauder aesthetically and am confident I can change the pickups myself if I don't like the way it sounds.
If it makes any difference, I'm planning to live in Gaunzhou or Shanghai...

Unless your are going to fork over enough for an American Fender, a Mexican is second and then a Chinese one. If you are really wanting a good quality guitar, buy at home. If you are just looking to have an axe to pick at in your free time, then getting one here is just fine, the quality is considerably lower, but its all about what you are using it for.
I bought a chinese fender here for playing around with at home, not for playing live shows. So it suits that purpose just fine. You wouldnt want to swap the pick-ups though. because its quality overall that is lower, not only the electric components (wood, craftmanship, etc)
So if you are going to try to play any live shows, bring one. If its just for keeping at home and wooing the occasional girl, save the money/hassle of bring it and just buy a decent one locally.
@ bike gypsy.. Yeah I already own good quality Fenders (a Japanese Jazzmaster and an American / Mexican Telecaster hybrid). I was meaning can I buy the Chinese Fenders in music shops in China and are they cheaper than the same ones I can get on eBay?
