Q: Buying furniture in Beijing - online or Ikea?

Hesitating on where to buy new furniture. I don't know why, but Ikea seems incredibly pricey - isn't Ikea supposed to be the poor man's furniture?

Several years ago a group of IKEA suppliers ended the partnership with IKEA because according to them the profit margin were squeezed too much. They worked with other disrtributors by modifying the design it's why you see similar items on tmall or taobao. And the price could be lower.

You can use Taobao.com and look for Ikea fakes if you think the real ones are expensive.

I would say neither. Try to check out some of the smaller furniture shops and second hand markets. There are a couple of cute shops along nvren jie which sell tables, chairs, drawers etc. which don't cost more than IKEA and are more original looking.

If your looking for variety and good quality Ikea would be the place to look. If you think IKEA is expensive don't be surprised at the prices in other places. In IKEA you can get a whole set of furniture such as sofa, couch, reclining chair, table etc.,

Most other places won't sell sets like that, only individual pieces which if you do the calculations will be higher than the set itself. The best time to get furniture at IKEA is during the holidays or when they have 'BIG SALES' going on. surprise

There's some amazing stuff you can buy online. High quality and cheap. Problem is, you need to surf Chinese websites for them. So, unless you have a Chiense partner, you're out of luck. As far as IKEA goes, don't trust them for a second http://answers.echinacities.com/question/done-over-ikea

depends on what quality you want.. If you can't spend a lot of money, then IKEA is like the best option in my opinion.

neither of your suggestions  ...on line is silly...ikea sucks.....find a place that makes the stuff ...look around you....... often if you find the neighborhood, there will be a lot of options and prices are "negotiable"

I get fake one of IKEA on taobao. Nice looking but quality isn't so good but ok to use still.

as I need it for the place I rent, so I wasn't looking for Sth high quality.

The prices online are more competitive. You can have more choices. Ikea has its reputation. But you can still find the same level online.

Ikea: the design is western and artistic.

Others: maybe cheaper but the design is can be weird if you're picky.

You can try 58.com if you understand Chinese. It is the Craigslist of China for people to sell second hand goods.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
