I'm only going to be in China about 6 months. I was considering bringing a couple of comfort things from home for cooking and stuff. If I decided to buy stuff there, what kind of stores would you go to? Walmart? taobao? this is going to be pretty much disposable, since I wont bring it home with me, so. cheap is preferred...
(If you say Ikea, I will cry! I am anti-ikea.)
For something short term and cheap, you don't have to go as fancy as Walmart. Any hole in the wall place can provide the basic cooking tools. Just take a walk down the street and stick your head in a door, you'll find what you need.
if you don't like Ikea or Walmart, don't forget China has its own grocery supermarket.
Any supermarket (whether Chinese or foreign owned) will have cheap utensils. There's Trustmart and Carrefour in Chengdu. Also, there are smaller, Chinese owned supermarkets.
When you buy something cheap here have a good look at it before you part with the cash. I paid extra for a saucepan with a thick base as I think the cheaper ones are just rubbish. Mostly the small village shops are good for the chopper, wok, chopping board and spatula. Go to Auchan, if you have one in your city to buy a good peeler and your knives, forks and spoons. You really don't need many things for 6 months. Also we have gas for cooking. You'll probably find that you won't eat much at home anyway!!
