Q: Can anyone advise the best way to apply for family medicine physician jobs in Shanghai?

I’m hoping to move to Shanghai with my young family of children aged 2 and 4. What’s the best method and most family friendly area to live/work? I only speak English (although currently learning Mandarin for fun) I am british born and trained with over 10 years of medical experience.

many thanks

You'd be best finding a job before you think about where to live...

Only way I can think to find jobs there is to search for all the private Western hospitals/providers and apply direct...

These are from expats living in Shanghai, I would choose Pudong myself. The first one is dated last year so it is reasonably up-to-date, the second is dated 2015.

The fact thay you have children means a good neighborhood is vital, so you may want to give location priority and search for work around that area.  There is no conflict between the two as a good location usually comes with good jobs.

Is there a reason you are hopng to move to Shanghai? There really are better destinations and easier ones to get a job with your NHS qualifications.

Love is blind as the saying goes. Can you afford to go blind with two children in your care? Take for example, have you checked the pollution indexes of china, especially Shanghai?

Practical question time:  you say you're bringing a 2 and 4 year old with you?  What do you plan on doing with them while you are at work?  If you plan on putting them in daycare, what do you think suddenly being in a completely foreign place where they know no one and can communicate with no one is going to do to them psychologically?

Also, are you prepared for strangers to come up to them and treat them like zoo animals, randomly touching them and giving them food/candies?  This happens to bi-racial children, so I would be curious to see what would happen to full foreign looking children.

Also, kids get snatched here regularly, so make sure that you keep a close eye on them.

Please, consider the physical, emotional, and psychological welfare of your children before forcing them to change their entire world.

The issue of schooling will also come up soon. Are you able to put your kid/s into an international school or would you be comfortable having them in the Chinese education system?

You could consider contacting Medicine San Frontiers. Do a year in the field to get your Mandarin up to scratch, then apply for Shanghai jobs when your kid needs full time school. I am not sure if MSF operate in China, but for sure, such experience would massively increase your understanding and empathy towards Chinese medical issues.

ScotsAlan:

Just to add. I know a foreign doctor in Guangzhou. PM me if you want me to put you in touch. He might be able to advise you. Good luck

The biggest medical issues with china mainlanders lies not in the physical but in the psyche. They need tons of psychiatrists to fix their narcissistic personality disorder, for one. Just the vile, brainwashed, psychotic da-ma and their toxic kids and grandkids are enough to keep  psychiatrists busy for several lifetimes. Can you believe that?

Yup Earth. I was thinking more of the role of TCM and superstition in China. I suspect it could be a shock for a western trained doctor.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
