wtf? I register an account and now they asking my ID and no way I can use my passport for that. Is taobao just for mainlanders??
You can just get someone that has an ID and use their account and buy, sell and trade things that you want that way. You would need a good friend to do this. I don't think any old joe would let you use their account.
Normally, foreigners can register in Taobao using their cell phone number instead of an ID number. So, when I am asked for ID number, I just type my cell phone and continue. Try that and see if it works for you.

thats actually wasnt what i meant. I have an account on taobao but when i want to purchase something im being asked for my ID. And only chinese people has an ID.
HappyExPat:
if you do not have an ID, what did you use to open an account? When prompted for an ID, just type whatever you gave originally. As I said above, my cell phone number worked for me
I somehow managed it. I registered using my email - at the time there were 2 options: register by cell phone or email. The ID number is just for registering an alipay account as far as I understand, and that's not available to foreigners. You can however set up online banking to pay online. Good luck!
d0mdeluxe:
yes alipay is also available for foreigners. I used my passport to register and can use it for quick payment on taobao and even mobile payment.
No we can't... In fact it we are also not able to buy anything in supermarkets or take taxis etc either.
Sorry I am feeling rather sarcastic today
yeah, you can. use your student ID or job ID or anything of the sort. You best get a chinesse to help you do that.
I am from Canada. I have ever bought stuff from China Taobao. But through a reliable taobao agent www.agreetao.com, taobao agent price is really low.
I use www.importbob.com
Sites in English and it searches things on taobao for you.
can check out :http://www.aliexpress.com/store/429399
no, don't use taoabao if you don't want to lose your money, this site is full of cheaters and liars and it doesn't care about it. they sell fake goods, contraband and steal money, i just lost my money there, i wanted to buy some shoes and after i paid the guy deleted his homepage and just dissappeared, and even i wrote several e-mails to the admins of taoabo they said they can't do anything and they don't care.
so if you don't want to waste your money stay away from taobao.com!!!
actually i found another website which doesn't require online payment and is YIHAODIAN.
Use your passport # or try your phone number. I opened an account at ICBC with a Dynamicode card and some money. Get some help to set up the ICBC software. It's not difficult with a little help.
I have never encountered any problems like this when using taobao.
One of my Chinese colleagues set up my account for me (without EVER asking for passport or other such information); he entered my address and explain to me how the payment system works with taobao.
If I don't know the vendor, I usually opt for the "payment after verification of goods" status.
Only one occasion did a vendor play a little game because he held the order for two weeks because he didn't have the item..and kept stalling and stalling. It was easy to cancel the order and that is exactly what I did.
And I gave him a sloth of pithy comments on his site...written for me in Chinese by a good colleague, too.
