Q: Can I bring some Thai Curry pastes (Ma Ploy) and Tamarind into China?

I will be returning to China soon and wish to bring some different Thai curry pastes (1 tub of each variety, approx 500 grams each, 3 tubs total) and some Tamarind which is a compressed, dried fruit (like dried figs). Will customs allow this import? I was hassled last visit over my 1 Kg Infant formula and cant be bothered dealing with the officials again.

China does not allow import of fruits in natural form (as they grow on trees).  Now, if cooked (as preserves) they should.  And the compressed dry fruit in a sealed enclosure I believe is Ok too.  They have dog sniffers in Customs' area, if dog stops near you signals the handler you have fruits in your baggage and will be inspected.

If sealed and cooked, dog should not smell it.

Thanks HappyExPat... All these things have been produced in Thailand then imported commercially into Australia where I will buy them. I am sure Australia has far more stringent quarantine rules than China, so I am more concerned with the vagaries of the Chinese customs officials... I have never had hassles in GZ or SZ but recently had the 3rd degree at Chengdu for baggage and what I was doing there too. Hard to predict, I know.

Thakkudu, thanks, but I want to bring them with me. I am not interested in using taobao, and in past trips I have had troubles finding these products in shops including all the western oriented shops. Some products too are much more expensive in China than Australia.

Gaohao, I have searched in the Chinese customs websites etc and cannot find any useful info, that is why I have posted the question here.

That suits me just fine fish79, I might add a Penang and a Red curry to the list enlightened

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
