The firewall knows no compassion. I missed my friends funeral because of the stupid fucking wall. Well done China.
Do you really think gmail is such a threat to national security that it should be banned from transmitting such simple messages as a friends death?
Is it right that I miss his funeral because of your harmonious society?
icnif77:
Sorry to hear, but why don't you switch to Yahoo-gle email?
I also have fairly normal access to Gmail through Safari. Mail folder receives all emails from GOOG or any other email address.
I can't do anything else on GOOG, but I can see and reply to all emails I receive to my gmail address.
I don't use VPN, just regular 'no windows' Mac Pro.
Chhris:
Or why don't you use Express VPN? It's only 30 USD per month.

That's rough, sorry to hear it. Was it a friend in China or abroad?
China is really pushing the envelope way too far on the blocking websites and popular media. It is causing me a lot of trouble with work. If I didn't have a VPN, I wouldn't even be able to continue working in China. I would have no choice but to leave because I refuse to go backwards... like this government.
It is looking more and more like NK these days.
sorry to hear that - it sucks big time, especially being so far from home.
unfortunately, governments get their collective panties in a twist when it comes to 'national security' and justify treating ordinary people like ****.
At the end of the day, people just want to lead their lives, yet it is stupid posturing and 'hurt feelings' on a grand scale that defies common sense, compassion and basic humanity.
They are doing themselves no favours internationally.
ScotsAlan:
I could be anywhere within 36 hours But the chinese Governmennt denied me the knowledge that I should be there Thanks their spupid fire wall.
In China..Government is more important than people. Wrong. so fucking wrong I dont give a flying fuck if your harmonious policy exculdes the use of foreign email. If I need foreign email.. give it to me. My needs are different from the farmers.
fuck me.... I come here to help and you punish me for it.
sorrel:
what retard down-voted these comments?
Usually it doesn't bother me, but this is just petty.
someone got something against people being compassionate?
icnif77:
'Downs' on this thread could be seen as 'karma' from previous replies.
I don't get why the Chinese government cares enough to block websites. How many Chinese people would change from qq to Facebook. Would any bother to? From baidu to google? Only people who use them are foreigners. It irritates us and no-one else
coineineagh:
Chinese would jump onto FaceBook en masse because it's a recognizable foreign brand. Then they'd find out everyone thinks they're delusional A-holes. Then they'd question the policies that made them this way.
The person who is downvoting this question and the answers is a person in serious need of help..
Ive just used my outlook type program on my tablet (the one that came with it) to login to gmail, even got an email from google to my normal account saying was it me who logged in, too little too late but maybe can prevent a reoccurrence
That sucks, mate. My condolences.
The firewall is part of the reason why I hate living here. I would work anywhere else for half what I get here just because I despise the country's political climate and economic system so much.
I use yahoo. It's not as good as gmail and it's been running rather slowly lately too. Do you have skype? I keep a friend's list in Skype just in case the kleptogerontocracy needs to hide something from the peasants and needs a distraction combined with a blackout.
It's retarded, stupid and petty....
But cos it can't be controlled and a certain "G-company" hurt the feelings of the Chinese people, its gone!
The average zhou couldn't give a monkeys about the rest of the internet. But hey, can't have those terrible outside influences contaminating the superior culture can we now?
Sorry to hear about your bad news Alan.
Robk:
Well, true THEY did hurt their feelings by leaving.
But it was China that first allowed Chinese companies to steal parts of the Google source code to birth the bastard that is known as Baidu.
Heartfelt sympathies. But it doesn't quite add up.
With all due respect and apologies in advance should I offend, wouldn't a simple phone call informing you of the tragic news of your friend's passing and funeral had been better than relying on the Internet in China, given that we all know how unreliable the Web is here? Not playing devil's advocate. Just perplexed. Again, my sincerest condolences.
ScotsAlan:
It does add up. My phone number is known, but I get so sick of hard sell phone calls I dont answer any call from a number not in my phone book. I have been here a while now, and people in the west do change sims to get better deals.
LD.Watson:
Understood. Even phone service in China can be spotty at times. Like you, I don't take incoming calls from unidentified numbers. Still, there must be a way to be alerted when urgent news needs to be relayed at a moment's notice. Skype, maybe? I don't know.
ScotsAlan:
That makes sense hi2u. Good idea. My wife goes to Scotland next month. I suggested she buys my sister a smart phone and set up wechat on it for her. People outside China have no interest in wechat, same as most people in China have no desire for facebook or twitter.
