or other belongings stolen while you are out and about.
I often hear about pick pockets in crowded areas, but at the same time I also hear that they do not target foreigners, any truth in that ?

I've had my wallet stolen twice, both times when I was passed out drunk. Both times I woke to find my trouser-pocket cut open and emptied. Had people steal from my apartment twice too. Strangers at parties. Had pretty sweet revenge on one of those though.

If you insist.
It was ten years ago in Yangshuo (i've told this story on here before I think), we'd had a party and some f****r stole a really good Swiss army knife I had. I thought about who'd come and rounded the culprits down to one fella I really suspected. He wasn't a poor guy either, that I might have forgiven, he was just a thief. He wasn't a friend but sometimes drank with us, so the next time we were all together (about 7 of us) I started talking about my knife (with my eye on him at the other end of the table). Then I said that I knew who'd stolen it, and his reaction confirmed I was right, so I started to lay it on thick. I said it was a rat who'd stolen it, just a filthy rat and that I wasn't angry, I felt sorry for him, because he didn't know how to do anything else, he was only a rat. He would marry a rat and have rat children because he was born of a rat mother and a rat father and knew nothing better, at which point he slammed his fist down on the table and shouted "NO!"
I just sat and smiled at the guy; he had nothing he could say or do, he just got up and stormed off. Everyone else was confused as hell. I laughed my arse off.
Not me, but I had an American colleague had her passport and mobile stolen from her handbag while on a bus.... twice in one week (she refused to learn! )
While I think foreigners may be less likely to be targeted, don't bet your wallet on it!
Also, this time of year is very popular for thieves!!! (cos they need the money to buy gifts for their parents, sisters, and nieces back home!)
never happened for me.. but one of my friend got the same stolen days after he landed in china... so it does happen... they are said to be concentrated around bus/train stations... i dont visit both places normally.. may be thats why never happened to me

I frequent those places very often (countless dozens of trains and busses). I get followed a lot, but I'm super paranoid in China, and I always stare them down and glare at them. They eventually just walk away.
Maybe ,sometimes. So we must be careful when we are out .
My friend had his pocket picked on the London Underground. He always had his wallet chained to his trousers, the pickpocket took his wallet out of his pocket, took the cash and cards and put the wallet back, all without my friend noticing.
I despise the thief but I've got to (reluctantly) admire the skill in doing that.
Almost. A girl put her hand in my pocket on the bus, and I grabbed her hand and yelled at her. Other than that, no. I've actually had my ATM card returned to me, along with my wallet and passport when I left them on the counter on accident.
I had my phone snatched on a bus, it was partly my fault because i was to confident that no one would try because I'm bigger. I couldn't get my GF to dial my number to see if I could hear my phone.
I felt a hand in one of my pockets another time. The pocket was empty. I turned as was just going the flatten the guy, but when I turned there was a cop behind him, so I pulled back.
