Q: Did you watch the Olympic Opening Ceremony?

My wife got up at 4am to watch it, and said she was disappointed.

Most of the news I have read said it was extremely good.

I have avoided watching extracts on the news as I intend to watch it on BBC iplayer tomorrow. So what do you think, was it good, was it a good reflection of Britain?

Too late considered I'm still one of those unlucky people teaching on weekends...But quickly checked some photos and it seems good.

I guess Chinese will always believe Beijing opening was the greatest ever...

Hi Hugh,

Yes, it was extremely good! Much better than four years ago.

I enjoyed it. Loved the caldron and how each countries individual flames were joined into one and will then be dismantled and taken back to each nation on departure. The girl and guy with the lost phone portion was a bit ordinary IMO but I am sure that any story featuring a cell phone will be a huge hit in China.

Fireworks to the sound of Pink Floyd is just about as good as it gets for me.

Watched some of it this morning  and generally enjoyed it. The historical idea was good but not always accurate, but hey it was meant as a window on England/entertainment and in that sense worked well. Went to lunch with my brother in law and his wife and they both enjoyed it and said many Chinese though it good. The industrial sequence with the forging of the rings( this is sounding a little like Tolkein) was brilliant. The NHS sequence was way too sickly sweet and bore no relation to reality today, but generally the whole thing was pretty good.

A little strange in parts but a very good attempt.  Some excellent special effects.    I'm sure it took a lot out of poor Queeny after her 'jump', she looked a bit dazed half way through the event.   Mainly aimed at the British, I think we have the sense of humour to understand most of it.   Very quirky.

Fantastic music!!

I did and I enjoyed it but I will always be impartial and believe that Vancouver 2010 was the best opening ceremony show of all time.

Watched it now, overall wonderful ceremony. VERY British and I'm sure there were bits that would have been lost on some international viewers. The opening historical segment was absolutely wonderful and the quote from The Tempest by 'Sir Isembard Kingdom Brunel' really got the hairs on my neck standing on end!

Pity about the blatant politicalisation of the NHS segment. The rest was wonderful, although I think Sir Paul McCartney may need to consider retirement as his voice is totally gone.

Was it better than Beijing, no, it was London different quirky and a wonderful window on Britain. Overall 9/10

P.S. They've really got to do something about the parade of athletes at all the Olympics, it is tiring for the athletes and boring for the public.

giadrosich:

I enjoyed Rowan Atkinson's bit with the "Chariots of Fire," and I do agree about P.M. Retirement is in order. I think his nest egg is big enough that he could do that and live comfortably. surprise

I got up at 3:30 a.m , watched it till 8:00 a.m while having  fruits and drinks on the side. The ceremony was great in general, showed us many points of Britain.I can't say it was better than Beijing, the two had their own characteristic, both were great. But i agree with Hugh,P.M. needs to consider retirement.
