Q: Do people have a fear of window seats on buses here?

Anyone else noticed this?

You get on the bus, and find that most seats are often taken up with one person sitting on the aisle seat and the window seat empty. No problem - there are still seats and all you have to do is simply ask them if the seat next to them is taken and presumably they'd do the logical thing and budge up. However many's been the time where I've just gotten blank stares and a half-hearted attempt at moving their legs while I try and crawl over them to the window seat. I could say it's inconsiderate, though I would understand if they're about to get off anyway (which isn't always the case in fact). Apart from the inconvenience, does it mean that people here have a problem with window seats on buses?

People are just preventing having someone in the seat next to them. Basic impoliteness. Naturally there is always a risk of a car flying through the side of the bus, so sitting in the middle might be a little safer.

LAR:

Scan,

Impoliteness indeed. "Naturally,..................safer," Too funny! Ha ha Ha ha..lol! Good one! You cracked me up bro! :p * Hey, but one never knows. This is China after all. :)

A number of reasons it could be.

1. Being inconsiderate, they don't want anyone next to them and refuse to give you an inch of space to take the seat..

2. If they are polite and let you into the seat next to them, they likely plan to get off at one of the next few stations, so they don't want to have to climb over people, if they don't have to.  Chinese people can be very inconsiderate, but also shy and don't like to say "excuse me" or "mmm goi" if they can help it.

3. The bus gets very crowded, so if it is full of people standing, not only is it a PITA to have to get off the bus by being in the window seat, but you also have to push a ton of people out of the way, and hope the driver gives you enoug htime.

4. Many buses have the wheel well right under 2 rows of seats, so unless you are a kid or a shortie, the window seat is to small to sit in.

5.  Also, some busses they never measured the seats properly, and any tall guys like me may not fit in the seats and have to stretch my legs in the aisle.  Sometimes I wish I was one of those tiny girls that can fit in anything.

I know exactly how you feel boss although my perceptions have changed over time from my infuriation of hapless individuals who didn't want to move.

I've actually found that on these buses especially during the wet seasons that it's a bit of a breeding ground for cockroaches and other creepy crawlies. I know it's a poor excuse but you do get a few of them in those dark dingy corners scuttling around your feet and on your trouser leg which isn't nice on a long haul.

Also, you gain a bit of leg room. Leg room is good for the ballsack. Not to mention the international bagsy rule of 'I was there first'.

Pragmatically it's just nice to be able to get off your stop with no hassle without having to clamber over someone, I've actually found one time I've missed my stop because it took me a day and age to overcome a sleeping woman who'd had definitely been on a baozi binge.

I don't think there's a phobia, just as I said before, a bit of practicality accompanied with a more comfortable position.

Where in the world are you living at? I've never seen this happen here at least in the city I'm at. On one of the buses that back seat the one in the corner is a bit crammed. You have to duck your head or otherwise your going to bonk your head on the top. That could be a reason why people won't take that back seat, but I've never seen this happening with the other seats. Even then the people will take that crammed seat if there are no other seats available.

Window seats are reserved for invisible six foot tall rabbits, not to be confused with rabbits with six feet. They have to ride at the back.

Scandinavian:

The six footed rabbits seldom uses the busses anymore since they figured out they have extreme luck in gambling. Now it's bling bling covered limos all the way for them.

On the local city routes, I know what you mean.  But I've found the opposite to be true on the long distance inter-city buses.  On more than one occassion, I've had someone argue with me about who gets the window seat.  I just give them whichever they want, better than having to put up with a grown man/woman and their hissyfit.

Hahaha, ive noticed that too and always wondered! I hate having to crawl over people especially if it's a guy and I'm wearing a skirt. At first I presumed they were getting off soon and so wanted to sit by the aisle but later i realised that this isn't the case at all. I don't know...it's weird.

I see this a lot. I also see that a little kid, about 3 to 6 years old is given a seat, and that kid will not SIT in it. He/she will stand and jump etc. yet if you ask if you can sit, the kid and the accompanying adult will scream and howl......

I think they're more afraid of the sun.  Even in the dead of winter they won't sit in a seat that is in sunlight..
