Durians are like cheese. It's either you love it or hate it. I LOVE durians. Can eat it all day. The variety you get here is crap. The best are from Malaysia, those bittersweet ones. Yum !

I never did acquire the taste for it. However, I will eat it if offered. The nastiest [tastiest???] ones I've ever eaten came from the southern Philippines.

Yes I love it, love the smell, love the taste. Agreed the best ones are in SE Asia (and much much cheaper at the source too), I was in a durian-producing area before and the locals could point out the different tastes and textures based on the outer appearance of the durian, they come in very creamy to almost like crispy chicken consistency, and taste from very sweet to a soft kind of luscious.

I wonder how many people have died from being struck by a durian, surely it has been used as a weapon before.

Stiggs:

I've wondered about them being used as a weapon too. I can imagine some warring hill tribe wrapping the spiky skins around a stick or something to use as a mace back in the day.

Nope, don't like them. I probably would if I could get past the smell, but in my mind it tastes like it smells even before I put it in my mouth.

I thought it was a poor evil anchestor of grapefruit, not very tastey, ugly looking stuff, It'd make a good projectile weapon.

sam239:

Nah grapefruit is an acidic little boobie. Durian is said to be the king of the fruits in Malay tradition, I read it contains a high level of cholesterol but a healthy kind of cholesterol that actually improves blood flow. And it's supposed to make you feel "hot" inside, I dunno maybe ask some Ch. traditionalists about why it's a "hot" fruit.
