Q: Do you need a license to sell stuff on taobao?

A friend of mine and I are thinkin about selling various products on taobao (coffee, tea, etc.) and I was wondering if you need a special license to do that kind of thing.

You would have to look into two different areas :

1.- One will be Taobao, and its management team.  What will they require of you to become a "partner" there and obtain authorization to list your goods for sale, plus their fees and conditions.

2.- And the second one, if you are a foreigner, what type of visa you and your friend have?.  Even if you may think different, selling is under the definition of "work", and in all probabilities, to do it totally legal, a work visa and permits will be required.

You don't need a license to sell stuff.  If you're importing tea then you need to follow the correct procedures for importing edible products.  But anyone can open a shop and sell stuff on Taobao. And technically Happy is right.  If you're doing business you need a work visa which I'm guessing will be impossible to get if you're business is a taobao shop.   Unless you open an official business and then do sales via taobao, you're not going to get a visa that allows you to sell on taobao.   Or you could just risk it with a normal visa and hope they dont catch you.....
