When family or friends come for visits, I've been told that they need to register at the local police station. Is this really true and what happens if you don't?
Yes.
However, only university housing seems to enforce this.
Any non Chinese citizen need to regester with the nearest police within 24 hours ( some told me within 3 hours)But it is 24 hours so i dont think a overnight stay is needed. You do need a prove of address in China so when you regester at a police station you can travel nhe landlord also have to acompany you to prove the property belongs to her/him
I have never registered overnight guests... It's not an enforced law in my town I guess.
rules are always pathethic, freedom shall be there.i think yes in china there is need to register but i have never done it before i have been to cities and stay with my friends and vice versa never informed anyone..........
It's not locally enforced as often as you would think. But the law states it's a 500rmb max. fine, but usually they will cut you some slack if you're visitors are only their short term. How ever, if family come and visit or someone other than a resident of China comes to stay with you, yes, you must registar them with in 24 hours in cities 72 hours in smaller towns or villages. This is where they will give fines, if a visitor has a f visa or z visa then they really don't care, but new Lvisas, you'd be asking for trouble if caught.
