It is expensive. One thing about an iPhone is it keeps value when reselling. An android phone will resell for little. I can sell and iPhone 3 for more than I would get for a good used model android phone.

When a new model comes out, it is best to wait until the bugs have been worked out, iPhone 3 had wifi problems, 4 had antenna problems, 4s had battery problems, 5 has a problem with the soft trim and i think battery life. All these get addressed in time.

If You want a "face phone" - buy iPhone

If You want to sell that phone after some time - buy iPhone

But if You want a good working phone - You can find good Android phone with the sale features, quality of screen, similar speed etc...
for half of iPhone price, and cheaper to use if You want to use many applications.
And memory cards...
And exchangeable batteries...

Having an Android phone - You can also customize it to be "music phone", "internet phone", "game phone", "business phone"... or all that "phones", not paying a single kuai.
Try to do some "application makeover" in iThing... Wink

iPhones, are "legendary", "have face" (if somebody have not enough of own)....
But when You buy 5th - please remember to walk with the box in other hand, or buy some phone case with big "iPhone 5" on it. It will help people to recognise, that it is not "old and not so face-cool"4$

but maybe I'm just strange Bear?

if you have a 4s dont buy a 5. if you need to use good mapping software buy a 4s and stick w/ os5 (google maps was taken of the 5. puck you apple!)

for those touting android phones, i agree. but we are in china. for some strange reason android phones do not come with translate, maps, and market. they only have the chinese ripoffs. unless you have an android phone from outside of china (or can get one) do not buy an android phone in china.

iphones suck when it comes to putting files on it (you have to put the file into the app you will use it with, not flexible). it sucks when it comes to managing music (you can't ontrol it from your idevice it resets it to match itunes each time or simply erases it. you have no control over it) but with google maps and translate other dictionaries and the time waster games it is great.

oh and by the way the battery sucks.

android phones for mainland china are useless

诸葛亮:

You can fix that by installing these apps (visit it on your android phone):

[Chinese App Store] 360 Mobile Assistant (360手机助手): http://www.baidu.com/s?wd=360%CA%D6%BB%FA%D6%FA%CA%D6&rsv_bp=0&rsv_spt=3&rsv_sug3=3&rsv_sug=0&rsv_sug4=8474&rsv_sug1=2&oq=360&rsp=2&f=3&rsv_sug2=1&inputT=10442 - This is actually very good... you can install it from the Baidu search page; just click the "下载到电脑" button. It's the first result.

Google Play App Store: http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/10/11/download-latest-google-play-store-3-9-16-with-new-ability-to-remove-apps-from-the-all-apps-list/#download

You can use the Google Play App Store to download everything, including Google Translate, Maps etc. However, you can't download stuff such as Facebook from China.

You can search the 360 App Store for 翻译 (translate).

And you can download Baidu maps, which is like a million times superior to Google Maps.

诸葛亮:

No, baidu maps is in Chinese, but it has icons that are pretty much universal. It also has a map system that really works well, and it tells you how long until you finish riding the bus, and where to get off at.

If you can find some Chinese names of stores, or even just a general location (use map.baidu.com, and then type it into the phone), you can use it and then click the mangled arrow icon. The rest of the steps are self-explanatory, and they'll easily take you to your destination.

I'm using Google Play (the android market got renamed to Google Play) and the 360 market. Both are really good. You can get translate/maps, and also look for Youdao translate. Google translate fails to work sometimes (this is China), but youdao dict has better translation.

My phone was bought in America, and I did install Google Play there... however, you can use your VPN on your android phone and get everything you need.

Without knowing ANY Chinese, I was able to use Baidu maps. It's really simple...

Click some place on the map that you know of... click the crookered arrow, and then choose an option:

BUS - TAXI - WALK

It'll give you directions on how to get to that location. It's AMAZING. You don't need to know any Chinese either. It also gives you the name and number of the nearest bus to get on.

Just confirmed: google translate and google maps are both available on the 360 Mobile Assistant store, and in English. The first link I posted.

Hmm... wow, this is pretty useful.
