Q: Do you like the way they serve beer in restaurants?

Yesterday I lost it. Temper tantrum. Went out for lunch with the group, BBQ lamb. Sunday tradition. Want a beer? Sure. Room temperature!! WTF. It's almost impossible to get a cold beer in any restaurant now. The weather is still ok although I like my beer cold even when the temperature is -40. It's an Aussie thing I know. The other really illogically annoying thing is when they serve the beer they just leave it on the table - unopened. You have to ask specifically for it to be opened! Doh!!?? Then they don't have an opener so you hope that in your group you have a genius who can pop the cap using a chopstick! Is this just something peculiar to northern China or is it commonplace elsewhere? Cold beer - the impossible request.

Well first I will start with the not opening. I've seen a table of drunk Chinese throw a fit because they were going to have to pay for beer that was open but they couldn't finish. And a hint, master the art of opening a bottle with a lighter. I don't smoke but I always carry a cheap lighter just for the need to parch my thirst when I'm out walking. Plus since everyone around here smokes, it's easy to find a lighter if you don't have one on you.

As far as the warm beer, I always have to specify that I want it could but there have only been a couple of times that they didn't have any. And that's been some really cheap hole in the wall places. Then again I don't live in the north.

What bothers me is the places rechill the beer daily. That always great skunk beer because they are too cheap to run the fridge during the night.

Just ask for "Binga" beer, they will have some somewhere or go out of their way to get it. They may even put it in the freezer. You just have to try and work with them and not get upset! When I first came here they didn't put it in the fridges at all even in summer, I soon changed that. The crazy thing is the locals like their beer cold now as well. Don't forget refrigeration is probably new to
most people and power costs money!

No, I hate it, but have gotten used to it.
I always send back warm beer. I also always have a good US Bic lighter to easily open beer myself.
Also I only order a few bottles at a time depending on the amount of people eating/drinking.
Warm beer is an oxymoron. In my country warm beer is illegal!

TedDBayer:

I used to chug beer when i was younger, never met anyone that was faster, It's easier to chug warm beer, so do it , probably the only way to get a buzz on that watered down stuff. fastest chug, 64 oz in 8 sec. from a pitcher, I miss being a Spartan.

I always ask if they have cold beer and get them to bring one for me to test before I eat at any resturant. The test is because it became obvious very early on that what the resturant staff thinkis cold and what I think is cold are two entirely different temperatures. If it is not cold I either go elsewhere or don't drink.

only happen in very very cheap Chinese restaruant...

woody:

What only happens in a very very cheap resturant? What do you class as a very very cheap resturant? If you are talking about no cold beer, then my friend, local or not you are very very very wrong. Oh wait. You are probably like the people in the resturant, who tell me the beer is cold and then when I check it is at or just above room temperature.

It's the same at the local restaurant as it is at the 5 star joints. We're in Daqing - oil city. There are no very very very cheap restaurants.

I like a snowy Happy new year, rather than a no sky one...Beijing's time to ban the cars---the only solution for the time being...

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
