Q: Does coca cola lower your sperm count?
yes folks, the ambivalent foreigner is enjoying a big mac before my journey back in time to a tier four city for my work week, so im in the enlightened tier 2 educated city of jinan for the weekend.
the middle school boys sit down at a table and get one boy to get the food and he asks the boy if he wants a coke, the boy without hesitation, says i drink orange juice, the coke lowers my sperm count. damn, i thought what a great idea to lower the population, subsidized free coke giveaways at every bank and supermarket.
this one ranks in my top 10 myths, close to the one from an xgirlfriend that i tried to buy eye glasses for who said glasses will make your eyes worse and you will have to waste money on them all your life. damn, you mean we can outlaw glasses and close all those eye clinics and hospitals and save billions of dollars, stop the presses, what a great idea.

no it doesn't. I believe the superstition is because cola has caffeine. which by Chinese logic is only acceptable if delivered through tea.
caffeine can have either a positive or negative impact on sperm cells. yup, that's right, can have a positive effect.

Approximately 12.5 % of the Chinese population in the age groups where having children is normal, cannot conceive naturally (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2012-12/19/content_16030598.htm) You've never hear about people going to fertility clinics as it is stigmatized even more so than it is in western countries.
Coke fucks up the kids teeth, but fruit juice, is it natural, puts just as much wear and tear on the teeth due to the fact that fruit contains pretty much the same amount of sugar as soft drinks.
Other reasons mentioned in the article. Women becoming infertile because abortion is used instead of proper birth control
Drinking any soda will give a sense of being full, take away space from broccoli and what not that is required to have a healthy functioning body.
Note. To make sure there is nothing harmful in your coke, you can sterilize it with a dash of rum. I would say Havana Club has the best sterilizing effect, but this is purely based on my personal experience.

it is curious that the article seems to blame the woman more for being the infertile person.
it is akin to blaming the woman for giving birth to a girl rather than a boy, like it is her fault.
Granted abortions totally **** up the body, but many men here work in toxic environments which can't help their fertility much.

It's not the coke, tea or Coffee themselves thats the problem for cutting down your sperm count, its the caffeine within these drinks.
Well, amibivalentmace, at first I just this question was another dirty old man question.
But then I did some research through the AMA and guess what they write? It's not myth at all. Here's the summary of the AMA article:
"The possibility of spermicidal effects of Coca-Cola was first reported in 1985 in the New England Journal of Medicine. Two years later, researchers at Veterans General Hospital in the Republic of China found that while Coca-Cola did reduce sperm motility, it did not have a marked effect. In March 2010, Reuters reported the results of a Danish study showing that men who drank 32 ounces or more of Coca-Cola daily could reduce their sperm count by nearly 30 percent. The researchers believed that overall nutrition played a role as non-cola drinkers tend to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, consume less caffeine and have an overall healthier lifestyle."

i guess the idea of a middle school boy saying this in a public restaurant at mcdonalds with families present with young children was not considered by anyone, im not sure he would have any knowledge of research but his brazen way of communicating was a little disconcerting given the country i presently hang my hat.im sitting in the back of the restaurant with my back to the wall and can understand what he said and my chinese sucks so i know everyone in the place heard him.

I do remember reading an article from ~ 20 years ago saying that coke is a spermicide. It showed as I remember that diet coke would kill ~ 95% followed by classic coke and then new coke with Pepsi only killing 80%. And No I haven't tried it out and I can't remember who ran the tests and how they were run.
by the way, the thing about glasses, totally true. if you wear glasses you'll have to do so for life, if you don't you'll walk in front of a car/drive your car into something solid and thus not need glasses ever.
OR...... maybe it would be worth considering that there can be many reasons for eye sight degrading. In China the common logic says "oh, eyes getting bad" without considering that it could be anything from a tumor pushing the backside of the eye thus distorting the vision, to a bit of dust lodged in the eye socket. Since TCM doesn't really care what the cause is, but treats the whole body (writing while sighing sufficiently heavily so the wife just yelled if everything is OK from the next room) then there is no notion of eyes being complex. You can eat one type of nut (or something) that will give you good eye sight for life.
Only if you dip it in the bottle of coke, so that only applies to the Chinese.
