Q: Does the martial art Kung Fu work in a real fight?

What is your opinion on the popular martial art Kung Fu? In old chinese movies Kung Fu has been seen as a competition amongst schools claiming whoever wins the fight is the best in the land. How effective is Kung Fu in a real fight? I have heard it was a combination of dance and tai chi but I am not familiar with the martial art Kung Fu. Anybody know?

It is as effective in a fight as any other style.  Each style has its strengths and weaknesses.  But the baisc principal is the same, keep your head, defend yourself, and strike when you see an opportunity.

Kung Fu vs. untrained hot head: Kung Fu wins every time.

You have very good points about strengths and weaknesses XpatJohn. I did read a post of yours that said if you were willing you would let your employees train self-defense or something like that. That was a good answer and it helped me out! I'm giving you a thumbs up for that!

I studied Tang Soo Do in university MANY years ago, and I noticed that all the marial arts say they are the best, that the teacher challenged every other teacher to a fight and kicked  their tails, etc.
The important thing is , to keep your head. like XP John said above.
Having said that, I did see a greek student box with a tae kwon do guy, and punch his butt.....

Your answer was helpful GullinRaf. I was curious as to why you gave the continuation. Was that to add to your story? Anyways your getting a thumbs up, good answer!

Just that if you master the basics well, you may prevail against someone who is more "showy" with fancy moves. Having a "black belt" does not make you invincible and just because you have studied "x" style for many years does not automatically mean you are good. Since I haven't practiced seriously in more than 20 years, I would prbably be more of a threat to myself than my opponent!

One of my favorite memories was seeing Mohammed Ali fight the top Japanese Sumo wrestler.

Mohammed got in the ring and started dancing about, the Sumo charged forward picked up Mohammed like he was a 90 pound Geisha, did a helicopter spin with him and then body slammed him like a rag doll.

Mohammed got up, bowed and gave the Sumo the respect he deserved.  :)

-Only stupid people write this. First  remember  all fight experience+muscle mass  is FAR more important than anything else. I've seen a  russian guy take down 3 chinese guys...with a chop stick. But he DID stick said chopsticik in a guy's throat, rip it out and poke  it in another dude's eye. If you think I'm lying he served in Afghanistan, and has a nice photo album of the 80's.

nevermind:

Oh yeah, I'd LOVE to see photos the Red Army took in Afghanistan in the 80s. I'm sure the Hague would too.

There's actually the possability to have too much training in a single style.

If you were the world's best sword fighter, then you'd start seeing everything in details of technique.  You would be able to predict your oppents every move simply by the way he shifts his body weight or how he grips his sword hilt.  And this would be why you could beat all the other great sword fighters.  So who is the sword fighting world would you fear?  The world's worst sword fighter.  All of your training would of trapt your proception into the strict rules of advanced fighting, but the world's worst wouldn't even have the skills to stay within the rules of fighting.  His improper grip or bad choice of body position would lead you to predict wrong.  The same applies to all forms of combat.

Yes if you're stronger, faster, quicker witted, and better trained you will win most of the time... Just don't let the training make you closed minded to that outside of or even below your training.

I think the most effective fighting skills are taught in the militarys around the world. The military training in Isral lookd brutal and quickly effective. Asside from the extremely real of military, UFC seems to be the prooving ground for martial arts around the world. Brazilian jujitsu plays a big role in the success of all the top fighters, but all the top fighters have well rounded skills in more than one style. I haven't seen any kung fu experts winning in the UFC. I watched one guy from China come with high flying kicks, very impressive. He got knocked out in seconds with a stiff right.

Ninjitsu is the best martial art for @$$ kicking.  At least that's what I saw on the Discovery Channel.

Chair!

Such a question is truly ridiculous!!

Kung Fu, like most martial arts, involves sparring - which means at the very least, the proponents have been practising fighting for some time - that on its own gives the person an advantage over others.

They are also taught the best ways to hit well... another advantage.

There is also the fitness benefit, and the mental benefits.

FTR, I can't think of a single kung fu exponent who wouldn't do ok in a normal fight (this does not mean X-year professional vs another X-year professional... I'm just talking a regular bar-brawl).

The real question might be - does all the stylistic idiosyncracies make any significant difference in a fight!!! Anyone got any thoughts?

In response to the Question, I am a Kung Fu & MMA Fighter  Started From The Base Of Street Fighting.  I Personally Have Had Many Street Fights Using Strictly My Adaptation To Kung Fu. Meaning, No fighter is going to be great in all situations without first taking knowledge from 1- multiple arts/styles; practicing the technique in every situation and surroundings. Again you need to make the techniques your own where they are easily used, and you are comfortable using them. Your surroundings are your best friend get to know each and every type... The Streets, The Forest, The Sandy Places. Kung Fu Is About Adapting To Life, How We Treat Each Other, And of course Self-Defense. We focus on having a calm spirit and focused mind. These two things make a real Martial Artist, While Some May Reject The Idea Of Training Mind,Body,And Spirit.. Those things are not just used for Martial Arts or Fighting; But Life Itself.  Fighting is not about violence but peace and defense.  Hope this helps, Sincerely, Christopher Ritter
