Q: Does tooting your horn work?

I just wondered, when you toot your horn on your bike or car, do people really give you lee way or do they just carry on as though they can't hear it?

Of course it does. 100's of millions of bike riders and motorists can't be wrong! Wink Wink

Nope. The horns are totally ignored. Nobody moves, nobody looks, nobody takes any notice. Just like the seat belt warning light / beeper and the indicator switch the horn should be removed from the vehicle. None of them make any difference!!

I tried tooting my own horn once but it didn't work out. And trying it on a bike just sounds dangerous.

I think it works, lets you know someone is passing you. I understood this immediately. Once this is over you can have a full 2 seconds of driving enjoyment and the freedom of your place on the not so open road. Shock Shock

I don't think they even hear it anymore. The only thing that works is headlights flashing.

It defs works. Without it I'd probably have crashed a few times. It's really good for passing or letting slow bikers know you are coming by. Usually they move over and let you go. It's also good for pedestrians that never look before crossing.

Usually a short toot followed by a long toot (ba-baaaaaaaaaa) does the trick.  Just hold that second longer toot until the desired reaction from who you're tooting at is achieved. angel

For me the bike riders on the pavement who toot to get out of their way are ignored, pavements are for pedestrians. Likewise the cars who toot while I am crossing the road on the white lines and the green light gives me priority. The rest of the timeI think they just do it indiscriminately, I don't see too many people or other drivers taking notice.

Depends of the sound of the horn. Some horns are so silent that they can't hear it anyways. If you get a loud horn they will move!

Drivers who honk at me, as I cross a driveway or crosswalk... get a big foreigner standing in their path with folded arms... Making them wait.  I have all day. You can just wait.

I want to make a sign: "Honking your car horn, except in a real emergency... is a sign of selfishness. You obviously care for no one but yourself. It is as if you are saying, "This road is Mine. Get out of my way!"

Bike bells don't work as effectively as yelling "Dang Xin!".

Car horns, surely work, well 99% of times!

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
