Q: Does your realtor shows your apartment to other customers when you are not there?

I rented an apartment in Xiasha from a prominent real estate agency. I have signed the contract and have moved into the apartment five days later. However, after moving in a couple days later I left my very clean apartment only to return from work to find straight hair on the bathroom floor. Now, I am a dreadlocks nappy hair woman, I don't have straight hair. So I called the realtor, who happens to be the only one in that office that speaks English. He told me that maybe his colleagues don't know that the apartment was rented and they are still showing it. So I told him that he needs to inform them that the apartment has been rented, and that it was no longer available for showing. But today he called me to ask me if it was okay for him to show a couple the apartment. I thought here in China once you rented an apartment and have singed the contract and everything the apartment is yours until the contract is over, or until both parties come to an amicable agreement about the discontinuation of service.

To make matters worst, there were no furniture in the apartment. However, they told me that get furniture but I will be the one to choose them (it's a new apartment). I tried to be reasonable by choosing furniture that were not overly expensive but I got nothing that I choose. Most of what they put in the apartment were items that are sure to break if I even touch them too much. In the contract it stated that if I break anything my security deposit will be forfeited. So I told them to take out the ones that I know will fall apart on me...I will not be scammed out of my security deposit...and so they did.

And now this! I called the customer service rep. who recommended this office to me and she told me that this should not be. That for my security the lock should have changed. I told her that the lock on the door uses keypad with a key. The key can open the door with using my passcode. She called them and they told her they have only one key and i have that one key. But that is not the case.

Has anybody ever been in this situation? And what was the solution? I only move to that side of town because I couldn't afford the apartment in the city.

Maybe your 'natty dread' hair get straighten out by the heat from the floor? Am thinking…..!

Don't worry! Go get dirty realtor! What's 'nappy'?

tsonj:

The floor is cold, it would have gotten nappier. It's nubian hair.

In the Caribbean we say 'natty' but in America we say 'nappy'. It is the same meaning.

Furniture...take photos of everything, especially where they look worn or could easily break.

Get the electronic lock/keypad checked out and changed for your own security.

One other thought......an agent might be showing other people round as the owners might be looking to sell the apartment. If that is the case they might find a way to work out of the contract with you early. If they do then insist on your full deposit back and the agency fee that I guess you paid, plus them to pay your next agency fee for the inconvenience.

tsonj:

Okay, thank you.

Move; while your contract is in place this is your home. Ask the realtor to point you to the place in the contract where it says what he is doing is OK.

I suspect the hair in the bathroom is from the realtor's GF.

Is the realtor's office beside the entrance to your complex?

tsonj:

No! It's ten minutes walk away.

That is unacceptable. My boss told me after I had been here for a few days that this African guy who use to live here, showed up at my apartment a few months ago and he had apparently made a copy of his house key and came to try and steal everything in the apartment The neighbors called my boss and they stopped him and made he go away. We laughed at how insane this was and I asked him how much did it cost to change the locks. He then tells me that he never changed the locks, he didn't get the spare key back from the African guy, and doesn't know where the guy is. angry

The locks were changed 2 hours later....

tsonj:

It's a new apartment. Nobody lived in it before me. But I guess I will have to change the lock.

Thank you.
