Q: Domestic violence - do you report it?

My neighbors are constantly yelling at each other, and I mean constantly. Chinese people naturally talk so loud it seems they're constantly yelling, but I'm almost certain at times I've heard the woman being hit - slapping noises followed by more yelling and crying. I've rarely seen the woman, but when I have, she always had large sunglasses on, even though the hallway is usually dark.

Should I call the police or do people not meddle with this in China?

best to stay out of it. i guess you can report it but it wont make a bit of difference, and your neighbors will hate your guts for causing them to louse face. the man and the woman, lousing face is far worse than a few slaps from your husband.

I guess it depends on the situation, you can't really do anything if you don't see anything and if it all takes place within their apartment. You might try to give an anonymous note to the police? Or maybe try talking to the woman when the husband isn't here?

If he ever raises a hand on her in public, I'd say tackle him down!

There will be two results.

The woman gets hurt more and finally cannot stand it, they get divorced.
The woman finally decide to revolt, and killed her husband.

And it's all depend on that woman, no one can do anything about it, if the woman doesn't want a change.

wenna7 being a "traditional Chinese woman" would know: this woman could be trapped for life, if she's married to the guy and has children and if they are both from the same village it would be pretty much impossible for her to do ANYTHING she would loose face, her family would loose face... She would not only loose her marriage but her children and her family and likely everyone in her life. If he's beating her, regardless the reason, it's her fault, that's how everyone will see it. Suck it up and take it. or snap and kill the guy then get executed. that's how they roll here.

There is no domestic violence in the heavenly kingdom. You are obviously hearing things and drawing conclusions because you don't understand Chinese culture.

Kolbol, how can you do nothing? If clearly the woman is getting beat on and yelling and screaming on the other side of your wall, you should at least go out, knock at their door and see if everything is all right. Use an excuse...

if you see what's going on and it's clear, threaten to call the police!

From China Daily:

"China's anti-domestic violence law will be written into legislation after years of campaigning, the Beijing News reported on Wednesday, citing sources at the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF).

The ACWF has campaigned for the legislation for four consecutive years, the paper said.

About 64 percent of adults have been subjected to domestic violence, and 60 percent of teenagers have been the victims of abuse by parents in a province based research by ACWF in 2010, the paper said.

The news follows reports that the famous founder of Crazy English Li Yang, known around China for his high-energy intensive language classes, was accused of beating his wife after a woman believed to be his American wife Kim Lee posted photographs on a Sina Weibo micro blog showing injuries she alleges were caused by Li."

Odd how they don't mention what the law will actually entail.

laws on the books mean nothing in china. best thing to do is stay out of it, remember if you intervene in anyway you will create more trouble for her and yourself. police do not believe in intervening in domestic matters until one kills the other.

There are different ways to handle these kind of situations.

I live in a gated community.  The gated community has a Neighborhood Committee aka the Neighborhood Police.  I would report them for infraction of noise violations late at night and surely the N C will understand.

We had a similar situation in my building.  We had a very objectionable tenant who was drunk at all hours, bringing people into the building at all hours, drinking and just vandalous behaviour.  I learned from this situation how the Chinese handle things.  They did not call the police.  No, not at all.

They went to see his boss at his place of employment and told his boss that this man could not be a good employee because of his conduct.  This worker needs his job.  He was reprimanded severely by his boss for his antisocial behaviour and he has been the paragon of quiet ever since that incident.

You might call the police but here they are truly loathe to get involved in domestic matters.

Cause them to loose face without doing directly.  It works.

the left 'me too' movement is eating it own members, it's like watching all lawyers in a steel cage fight to the last one standing. the bad part of cheering a fight with all hypocrites is nobody has a favorite to cheer for.
