Q: The effect of bad Hollywood movies being released in China?

recently I watched Taken 2,, and i was not the only one disappointed. a few chinese actually walked out of the movie. watching middle aged men fight like middle aged men just sucked. the car chase scene was stupid.

(when the hell is GI Joe coming out??)_

I believe Hollywood is only allowed to release something like 30 movies a year in china (unless it has changed again)

in my thinking we can't afford one of them to suck so bad.

How are the movies choosen on Hollywood's end? (i would like to volunteer my services to preview any movie before it is released in china)

another question. How can i get a list of movies to be released in china?

(I feel i did an extra horrible job in typing this post, my apologies coffee hasn't kicked in)

Taken 2 sucked?  Man...it's in my queue of movies to watch, cause I really liked the first Taken.

crimochina:

my advice download it and check it out yourself. 3 people left mid way and people started leaving before the movie even finished . (legally, crimochina does not endorse or condone the illegal download of anything. crimochina definitely does not engage in  the illegal download of anything, you can check his 40gb harddrive but not the 1.5 terabyte harddrive)

I poked around the China Film Group website but didn't find anything about a release schedule. I too was looking for such information a few months back. My guess is that they play it pretty fast and loose, depending on which studios grease their palms the most.

As for the number of movies, I read a while back that Hollywood was in the process of negotiating with CFG to up the number of movies, and that some of the bargaining chips were "using Chinese actors" and "using Chinese settings". Hence the 10+ extra minutes of Shanghai footage in the recent Looper film, and the chinese co-production of the upcoming Cloud Atlas film.

As for why so many of the movies that come here suck, I think that's a larger indicator of the state of Hollywood in general. Yes, there are still decent films coming out, but these days, a majority of the 'money makers' are terrible remakes and sequels. Personally, I think its the re-golden age of television shows right now (the wire, breaking bad, homeland.....)

^^^^^ I agree , right now is a great era for tv shows again.  so many good tv shows the last 4-5+ years with really good long stories playing out over a few years.  It's awesome.

Since 1949 the cinema of mainland China has operated under restrictions imposed by the Communist Party of China's State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television and the Publicity Department. Many films with political overtones made in China are still censored or banned in China itself; however, some of these films are distributed abroad commercially or at film festivals. China also restricts the showing of foreign-made films in Chinese cinemas to 34 each year.[1]
