The situation is that someone has a couple weeks until passport and Z visa/residence permit expiration. If the earliest possible day to get into the embassy for passport renewal is a little over a week from the passport expiration date and with Z visa/residence permit possibly taking over a week to complete, what is the best course of action? From what I gathered online, it seems to take around 7-10 days for a new passport to be processed/issued and I believe it's about the same for Z-visa+reisdent permit.
I assume by leaving the country and waiting until rearrival to renew the Z visa/residence permit, it would require a full re-application and medical exam?

Call your embassy, see if you can courier the passport to them and pay to have the passport rewewed faster.
You can't get a new visa without the passport having at least 6 months ( I think, maybe more) before it expires.

Contact your Embassy in China and seek an advice, because length of processing for new passport varies from country to country.
Your Embassy might give you fast service and then you should save old book with valid Z and show it to the authorities together with new, valid passport.
You'll most likely have to re-apply for new Z in Chinese Embassy abroad (out of China), so start bothering your employer for new Invitation letter and other docs. (Working permit) necessary to get Z visa.
May need to get a temporary passport, while you await the new passport.
