Like greed, fear, "face" is not really directly measurable but indirectly, yes.

How much "face" you have is reflected in how many "chess pieces" you can move, from not having to line-up at whatever queue to vacating an entire restaurant without paying anything because the consequences of not obeying you is serious enough.....

This is a product of tyranny, guanxi,  corruption, the need to being flattered / worshiped / obeyed / respected.....etc. It is the ultimate (inferior) slaves' (communists too) vendetta dream ---- "now is my turn to screw you". It also is what the cultural revolution is really about. Very dark, deep undercurrents beneath this "face" thing with Mainlanders, guanxi network, manipulations, greed, raw violence, unscrupulous, soul-less. The observable behaviors are for everyone to see. People have eyes.
