has anyone cracked how to explain that the system and the people are not one?
I always found it better to just not get into that conversation.
It doesn't help though when people ask you what you think about....(insert contentious subject here) , you can see they're already getting ready to be offended and you know damn well they're thinking back to every propaganda class at school where they were told what the foreign agenda was.

Honestly I just speak my mind, I'm not going to self-censor to please people or the system. Just Sunday I was told by a local friend that his VPN doesn't work, I said ah yes it's because the anniversary of the (you all know what) is coming and I mentioned the thing out loud in a busy café, I don't care if someone gets triggered by it.
When people ask me what I think of X or Y I just speak my mind. No I don't think the food here is that great, it's mostly oily carbs and it tastes like crap on top of being unhealthy. If they can't take my opinion then they shouldn't have asked for it in the first place.
Just speak your mind, don't play the game of self-censoring that Chinese play for this bullsh*t harmony and money over values. You are not one of them anyway, self-censoring won't bring you anything but frustration, you are not going to climb the social ladder thanks to it, you are just a laowai after all so start acting like it.

I use Express, it's dead in the water now, hence why I came back to this site, otherwise I'm usually at Reddit r/China or CCJ
Why criticize the country?
Scandinavian:
well, just discussed this yesterday with a friend. She said "You criticizing us doesn't change the regime"... to which I replied "No one criticizing the system certainly will not change anything"
The reason why critique is needed is that I really like the Chinese, the country, the culture. I want people to have basic rights, safe foods, clean environment etc.
The Chinese can't handle the truth.
RandomGuy:
They live in their delusions. They get fed news telling them that China is the best and the outside world is dangerous, China good, foreign bad, 24/7 non-stop.
diverdude1:
remind me of that movie? haha. 'you can't handle the truth!'
seems like a Jack Nicholson rant...
