Q: Fist fights - a rarity?

With violence so low, I was wondering what people's personal experience was. So far, I have seen many huge groups of people gathered around verbal bouts in the streets, but never have I seen more than a weaksauce catfight between old women.

Anyone seen an all out fist fight in a public place, or do they just not happen in China?

One time I saw a big guy on a bicycle have a minor collision with a little guy on a motorcycle.

It wasn't serious and no one was hurt but the little guy jumped off his motorcycle ran over to the big guy yelled at him and then clocked him right in the face.

The big guy tried to threw some punches but didn't land any. The short guy must have been somewhat trained at fighting because he gave a body shot and then another jab to the face. The big guy realized he wasn't going to win so he got on his bike and hightailed it out of there.

It was funny because the little guy only came up to the big guys chest but he beat embarrassed the crap out of him.

I've seen a few fights in China, although I would not classify them as fistfights. More like slappin' each other like a bitch fight and then trying to do some crazy Kungfu kick.

Damn back in Texas we just slam people like that. My Daddy, god rest his soul, gave me the best piece of advice when it comes to fighting. Never let your feet leave the ground.

I've seen some 'fights' in China but as mentioned before, they're more like pussy bitch-slap contests. It goes against the old western myth that everyone in China knows kung fu; in actual fact they guys are often weaker and more feminine than the girls - godedenfaisse being a prime example.

I'd rather get into a fight with any number of Chinese guys than girls - the women sure know how to hit!

What?! Man I see an average of one tilt a month! You must live someplace with nice people.

I'm not kidding, I see fights here ALL THE TIME. I've even brawls involving more than 20 people.

godenfaisee, you're an idiot.

I would almost bet that was 20 people beating the crap out of one. I have been here many years, and never seen a real fight, just girly boys bitch slapping each other, then calling for friends on their mobile phones. If you see regular fights, you're hanging around the wrong places.

I live in Shenzhen, and I've seen quite a few. i've seen guys going at it in buses (once even hitting the shifu), in the streets, subway. Once I even saw someone getting out of his car on a red light, walk over to a nearby car and kick in the driver's door.

Not many catfights, though.

Granted Shenzhen may not be the shining paragon of the ideal, moral city, but still...

I've gotten into 3 fights so far. Once because a drunk guy disrespected my girlfriend, twice from a verbal bout that quickly degenerated.

The only thing to be really careful if you're gonna pick a fight is they have no sense of fair here - they got their buddies around and you'll be swarmed quick.

It's usually very hard for expats to be engaged in fights though - people know the consequences for beating up an expat are higher.

Unfortunately the only fights I seem to see are men vs. women. Sometimes the women are the attackers, but most often in my area I see men beating the crap out of women.

Once in Inner Mongolia I saw a man pounding a woman's head into the pavement while 50 or so onlookers just gawked and wouldn't help her. I just had to keep walking! Crying

godedenfaisse: you are the dumbest dumb person and you are a great example as to why foreign women in general avoid chinese guys, and why more and more chinese women look outside the country for a husband. (even though there are 30 million more men than women here)

i have seen plenty of fights here all involved chinese. chinese people also love to attack the bus driver, while he is driving.
the problem is many chinese men cant throw a punch or take one.
the only punches that i saw that were accurate and dead on, were thrown by 2 women after they crashed their scooters into each other

Oddly enough, I have never witnessed a fist fight in the street. Be it in the big cities or more rural areas.

Lots of bickering, yes. Lots of crying, yes. Never any actual violence.

I've personally experienced one fight. A bunch of drunk racist Chinese guys picking a fight with what they thought was a lone foreigner. A bunch of my friends jumped in and it turned into the ass whippin of the century. 95% of the time it's just a bunch of bluster though. Like how animals try to show off to an opponent until one gives up and backs  down.

There's always fights in Beijing on the street. I can never figure out why, cause I can't make out the Chinese when they're all yelling fast.

Happens a lot in Harbin, not so much in Da Lian.

In the west, there's a man code for not using weapons. In China, there's nothing dishonorable about 5 guys smashing bottles and hitting a guy with a metal pole while it's One Vs. All

Westerners, don't get all "chinese dont fightz" here. Go to a hospital after midnight. You'll some awful, awful post beat downs in there.

The chinese fight with weapons and aren't afraid to use anything around them

I have seen some pretty nasty slash wounds on both men and women. Really deep gouges of flesh, scars, etc.
One guy I know got stabbed in the stomach with a broken bottle.  His crime? He did not want to drink with some bigshot so he got stabbed!
Anyway, I no longer live around those parts!
