Q: Gender inequality - better in China than in the U.S.?

I was reading the article on the main page about influential businesspeople in China, and I think I read somewhere else out of those 50, 3 were women. Now, that's a terrible number. But, if you picked the 50 wealthiest people in the States, would you get 3 women?

Basically, more than that, I guess what I'm asking is whether or not gender inequality is considered a big issue in China or not.

That it exist, yes, China has a male dominated way of life up and down their society.  Is it a big issue here ?.  I would say no, women here seem to be reasonable satisfied with their secondary role in some ways.  Some individual protesters may flare up once in a while, both in my opinion, women's liberation as for example in USA has not landed here at all yet.

I guess that your question does confused me a little, and the only way to answer it as you asked is to say that for Chinese men, yes, in China is better than in USA, but for Chinese women is it not, but they do not really know that yet. Too many years of tradition are carried on their backs !.

I would say no, it isn't better. Women in China certainly don't have equal status. Equal opportunity exists on paper but there is still a lot of sexism in attitudes about relationships and in the workplace.

China is one of the few countries where there is a higher rate of suicide among women than men.

To answer your first question, 6 of the top 30 wealthiest people in the US are women, according to Forbes.

Shining_brow:

While this is true, how many of them made it through business connections - eg, managerial roles... rather than in the entertainment industry?

I typoed. It was 5 not 6. And not a single one of those 5 are from the entertainment industry. 2 are walmart empresses, 1 candy, 1 fidelity, 1 media

I asked my students to do an essay on gender equality in higher-level managerial positions... most of them, boys and girls (18-20yo) thought that men are more capable than women in most regards - except for looking after the house and family. Even those who supported having more women in executive positions were doing so only to balance out the men, by being more 'careful', and more better at human resource stuff.

Most were under the delusion that women aren't as logical as men, nor as capable on their own to run a business, and their emotions, desire for children, and monthly menses, would all bring about the downfall of the company...

Then, I asked them why the girls were all better students than the boys... no answer Tongue

GuilinRaf:

In the classroom, some boys will say that girls are the same as boys, but when the girls are out of earshot, they will say that outside of family and some professions, girls are "useless".

The REALLY STUPID thing about it all was, virtually ALL of the 'arguments' were about 'this is how it's been, therefore that's the way it should be'.... NO sense of logic (or the absurd) at all!

You ever heard of Oprah Winfrey yeah she's pretty much the wealthiest female or one of the wealthiest females in the states richer than most men! I would say inequality in the states is bigger than here. I've seen and known many females in high positions living in CHina....most of the schools are run by females here...

HugAPanda:

Thumbs down yaya. Oprah is 139 on the list with a mere 2.7 Billion.

Also, as I mentioned above, she got it through entertainment - not through business management!

At last the clouds are gone and manna from heaven is upon us, all married closet gay men now have something to observe at a football game, perhaps China needs this more than America though. Now we need transgendered mascots and a rainbow at the goalpost or net depending of your version of football and world peace will finally prevail, can you feel the love brothers and sisters.

This is hilarious in my sick twisted mind. A womens prime minister meeting in Canada and the male Japanese prime minister is the only male by appearance there, but in Canada you can claim to be a female and you are, so what's the problem? where's the love for the japanese man oppressively raised as a disgusting male all of his life. Rejoice the world is a better place, now, let's kill the infidel males that have not conformed to female gods yet.
