Q: The Great milk powder debate

Once in awhile I have to stick up for China.
In Australia the milk powder trade is in the news again.
The big supermarket chains have been pressured into locking the baby formula away with the cigarettes and a 2 tin limit.
This will last as long as it takes them to realize that their turnover is down and they have a huge stockpile.
The milk companies encourage the stories for 2 reasons.
Firstly it's free advertising.
Secondly they have an opportunity to take over the industry and sell straight to China which is starting to happen now through some Chinese bussness men .
And the best part they don't have to increase productivity as they can blame the solo opperaters for the shortage and nobody will be the wiser.
Chinese are survivors (like a cockroch after a Nuclear bomb)
I don't know any Chinese on unemployment benefits. ...they work for what they have.
The one's that don't. .stay exactly where they are .
Intrested to see your comments.

Phil, this is the most informed comment I've read on the milk formula trade ever, by anyone (other than myself).

I export milk formula legally, pay my taxes and everything (crazy, I know). I've only ever been limited in how much I can buy/sell by the following factors:
1. How much fits in my bike bags. Redundant now that I have a car.
2. How much orders are coming out of China. My wife is trusted and liked, but even we face competition from large, faceless online sellers. Most of our buyers are still willing to pay extra for the verifiable food security we offer (photos in shops, stamped & signed packages in untampered shipping boxes).
3. Occasionally a shortage in certain stocks, but rarely lasting more than a week.

Buying limitations have made my buying sprees longer (more legwork going to multiple shops), but they have NEVER limited me in my ability to get what I need on time. Limitations are always of the 3 categories above.

You are absolutely right that all the milk formula theatrics is just the big fish trying to muscle out the little fish and control the market. All I can add to your excellent observations, is the fact that all the Chinese VISIBLY going in-and-out of shops for a box or two at a time, raises apparent demand for the goods, allowing producers and retailers to "justifiably" raise prices.

philbravery:

it gets to the point of Racism to.

I can go into a shop and ask for the product and get it no problem

Yet  my wife can go into the same shop 2 minutes later and it's '"NO milk for you'"

The media go along blindly and ignorant and lazy people use it as an excuse because they see somebody getting on with life and making money..

I will tell you how dumb My country is

We have a postal service here going broke yet the small Chinese  parcel services ae flat out.

But nobody here is clever enough to employ  a simular business modle .

I think society has got to the point that racism is displayed openly. Anyone accused of racism will get support from very passionate and motivated interest groups for conservative political identity. If you're the victim of overt racism nowadays, your best bet is to stay silent about it lest the brutal, domesticated attack dogs smell your blood. It has always been a discussion stopper, and now that things are so ridiculously dramatized, any case of racism becomes he-said-she-said, with no sense of anyone being right or wrong anymore. Racism used to mean a person was targeted and victimized. Now it's just equated to a distasteful politicisation of personal disagreements. "Oh, the white genocide, Obama the Black Messiah, Muslim enrichers and the terrorism/rapist/pedophile-supporting liberal elite."

In this case I think it is because the Chinese get of their arse and do what they can to live and store as many Nuts away for old age and their children where as the so called Average Aussie is to Lazy to get off their Arse because it's easyer to bring the others down to their level .

only 40% of the Austalian population work and pay taxs to fund the rest.and their is only less than 30 million of us .

I hate Lazy people looking for a hand out instead of trying to improve their lot in life

I am an old fart...   61 ....   and in my world, milk is a liquid. whether it comes from a goat, or a camel, from MOM or a cow  ....IT IS A LIQUID..  No way that you could ever convince me that that powder shit is MILK. And there is now way to conserve the nutrients in milk for months on a shelf either in liquid or powder form.....    basic ingredient that should not be f***ed with

You're right. Milk powder is nutricious enough, but the most important component - the mother's antibodies to shore up a baby's fragile immune system - are lost in the drying process, not to metion from a cow instead of a human. I'm not in favour of pushing milk formula on to poorly informed mothers, but a lot of it is involuntary and not involving a choice at all. The 80% C-section rate does a lot to make breastfeeding impossible (while the mother recovers physically from the operation, she can't breastfeed for a long time, and after about 2 weeks without suckling, breastmilk production will stop).

"I don't know any Chinese on unemployment benefits. ...they work for what they have."

this is a very true and real statement....  family is together   5-10-50 of them....TOGETHER  ....    western world is far more about individuals or god forbid couples.  I have tried to get my 5 brothers and sisters together to run a corner store in Canada...  hahhahaah   what a joke, is what i GOT   that's for Chinese and East Indians

coineineagh:

Humans have always been social animals. No matter how smart you are, you can't compete against a close group. Smaller-brained Homo sapiens outcompeted the larger-brained Homo neanderthalensis by being SOCIAL. Humans passed on learned and collected knowledge to their children. Neanderthals had to reinvent the wheel (more accurately the speartip) every generation. Neanderthal speartips were reasonably good early on, but never improved much down generations. Human speartips went from crummy to sophisticated over time.

I read that Chinese and East Asians are more closely related to Neanderthals because they interbred much more than other groups of people.

I find it odd that a business DOESN'T want to maximise their sales.

I think you will find they want to get more for what they make now instead of increaing production....why sell for $100 to Dim Sim  when I can get $300 from Who Flung Dung

Where did you read that rubbish? Neanderthals weren’t even in East Asia. Plus interbreeding wouldn’t make no difference if no Neanderthals here.

philbravery:

Actully they found that Neanderthals are the ancesters of First  Australians

and there is strong evidence that Native Americans hail from China ...Sorry .I read to much

Very interesting feedback Phil. I’d gone & read a brief article on the reach of Neanderthals before posting & it made no mention of Australia.

this article mentions the more recent research in Aus.

Tommy: You shouldn't drink that stuff anyway. [looking at the milk Turkish is drinking]
Turkish: Why, what's wrong with it?
Tommy: It's not in sync with evolution.
Turkish: Shut up.
Tommy: Cows have only been domesticated for the last eight thousand years. Before that, they were running around mad as lorries. The human digestive system hasn't got used to dairy products yet.
Turkish: Well fork me Tommy. What have you been reading?
Tommy: Let me do you a favour. [takes the milk off Turkish's hand and throws it out the window and it hits a car behind them followed by screeching tires and a loud crash]
Both: [Look at each other]  Whoops.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/us-stuns-world-using-blackmail-to-oppose-international-breast-feeding-resolution

Somebody explain this to me, I can't get my head around this at all.

Yes, milk powder companies want to make money, but political contributions to both political parties in America from Dairy corporations is nothing compared to oil and defense contractors. I can't believe we have to thank the Russians for promoting the health of infants. What a screwed up world?

Investigators looked at the Phillippines in particular and reported that formula companies, including Nestlé, Abbott, Mead Johnson and Wyeth (now owned by Nestlé), targeted doctors, nurses, midwives and new mothers by creating “infant care” pamphlets promoting formula for distribution in hospitals and using Facebook advertising to reach potential customers. The companies denied any wrongdoing."> WTF why would you try and sell milk powder in a country where the people can't afford to buy this stuff, you can't make money selling anything in the Philippines but basic cheap food, clothing and shelter.

That seems like brazen, corrupt gangsterism to me. It's like they're not even trying to really hide it anymore. I hope the media gets hold of this and runs with it, expose the feckers for what they are.

I was reading about this on reddit earlier, people there were talking about how Nestle goes into a 3rd world country with people dressed as nurses saying that this product is better for their babies, hands out free milk powder which will last the mother just long enough for her own milk to dry up, then sell them their powder and since it needs to be mixed with water and the water there is dirty they have to buy Nestle water too.

I feel like the activists who are making companies like Nike etc accountable for what happens in their sweatshops should be targeting the milk powder companies instead, or maybe as well as the sweatshops.

Its on again ...But maybe at an end soon with Chinas New Tax rules on wechat and Alipay

https://www.9news.com.au/national/2018/11/07/14/22/baby-formula-scam-buy...

Those nasty racist landwhales who filmed innocent buyers claimed the following: "“It’s not that we have problems with them buying it. It’s that they sell it overseas for two-three times the price. That’s the problem we have. They’re ripping off their own people,” Alisha Hill said." - WRONG. They're supplying untainted milk formula to babies (often relatives) at real risk of getting poisoned milk formula back in China, with an uncaring government using 80% Cesarian section rates, high infant formula prices and contamination, to poison and kill off their own unwanted poor people. The newest stopgap solution to clean up the population fallout from Mao's go-forth-and-multiply policy, after one-child-policy was a dismal failure (ppl in countryside could not be contained). It's the new race-related offense. Police have a problem with peopel DRIVING WHILE BLACK. Nearly everybody has a problem with people MAKING MONEY WHILE CHINESE.
