Q: Has anyone been through the silk road route in China?

I have always been interested in the Silk Road route, but in the end I end up visiting other places that are closer or easier to access. Have you been to the silk road? Any specific points along the route that are worth visiting?

Bear in mind that the Silk Road is actually a diverse collection of ancient trade routes, and there are a number of different places and ways to experience 'the' road.

That said, I can highly recommend Turpan, in central northern Xinjiang, as a wonderful little city to visit. It was a major stop of the northern Silk Road routes, and it has history, landscape, food and culture on its side, and the local Uyghurs are some of the friendliest people you'll find - Central Asian hospitality is strong. Plus there's camels. And there's kebabs.

Some of the scenery in that part of the world is magnificent and the 'lost' city of Jiaohe is remarkable, all the more remarkable for being practically empty both times I visited.

Also, go see Kashgar while there's still some elements of ancient Kashgar left to see - it's already almost too late. My biggest regret from my time in China was not going to Kashgar.
