A more recent travelogue than Riding the Iron Rooster, Evans travels by rail and bus to interesting parts of China. A sole woman traveler, it's a good read if you're thinking about backpacking or traveling on your own.

Inside the Red Mansion. I just read it, its about Lai chang xing in Xiamen, and the whole story behind that. Really good insight to the inner workings . Its written by a journalist.

Not lately, but 'The Long March:The true story behind the legendary journey that made Mao's China' which I read 4 years ago was excellent. Highly recommend. Two very genial and easygoing guys from the UK retracing the route of the Long March by foot, meeting all sorts of interesting people along the way.

I got a really interesting china related book but I have yet to read it. I've probably only read the summary and it is about history not to long ago. I need to read that soon. All I can say is that the event in the book occured about 20 years ago so that's not that long ago and it is a nonfiction book.
