I can thoroughly recommend Turpan and Heavenly Lake in Xinjiang.

Turpan is a pleasant little town, with thosuands of years of archeological history and beautiful landscapes surrounding it.

Heavenly Lake is like a little piece of the European alps, I'm reliably informed by people who've been to both. Quite strange, considering the entire national park is surrounded by desert.

MissA:

All I saw of Xinjiang (not much, sadly), outside of Urumqi, is beautiful.
