Q: Has conservative anti immigration laws had an impact on your plans?

In my case yes.

Because of Conservative UK immigration laws I am now an exile.

What about your country?

I thought your plans were to stay in China for the rest of your life!

At least, that's what you've been telling us all on here for the last few years.

The immigration laws that affect you, me & other Brits haven't changed in quite a few years. We'd both have no real issues getting our Chinese families back to the U.K. as long as we had jobs lined up.

Is that true, honestly? You can't move back with your family because of UK immigration laws?

What's the problem they don't take spouses anymore?

Hotwater:

No it's not true at all. The earnings/savings  requirements haven't changed in the past 5 years!

Really don't understand Scots reasoning for this question as he's well aware of the U.K. requirements. They haven't changed and if he got a job back in the U.K. doing what he does in China then he'll have no problem getting a settlement visa for his wife...

it just seems like trying to take a shot at political opponents. Trying to assert some kinda personal victimhood.

I'm not even super anti-immigration but shit like this doesn't help the case of the pro-immigration side.

Remember Scots, you can only convince a skeptic...the people who already agree with you don't need more convincing. And the skeptics don't appreciate obvious partisan bullshit.

Not victimhood expat. And not a change in the rules hotwater. The existing rules are conservative rules. I was here before they were introduced.

Yeah but these rules are over six years old and we've discussed them before Alan. You'd have no issue if you had a job offer before moving back...

In the US I think you can offset that job requirement with savings. It's just about having a reasonable expectation that the people coming in aren't going to starve in the questionable care of the irresponsible. There is probably something you could be doing to solve your problem and meet the requirements. Remember, there are reasons for these laws other than racism like preventing human trafficking and abuse of the system by bad actors. It's a shame when a law makes things inconvenient for a decent person but that doesn't mean it's a bad law by itself.

Look at it from the anti-conservative point of view...you don't want conservative, privileged old divorced republican white men cashing in their white privilege abroad to bring in young brides they can dehumanize while cashing a privilege check from the government that could be paying for more pressing matters do you?

In america, the lines at the immigration office are getting smaller, so my paperwork will actually process faster for legal immigration of a spouse.

No but conservative immigration rules make sense in times of economic uncertainty. When countries don't have enough jobs for their own people, there is no point in bringing more people in. I'm all for bringing in talents and experts though, but mass immigration makes no sense nowadays. If anything, developing countries are the ones that should have open immigration policies, they are where most of the jobs are.

Should have thought ahead and got your paper work straight for you and your family. You seem to have your shit together for the foreign country you are in, should have done the same for the one you're a citizen of.

Oh, the irony!

Bitching about immigration laws from a country where NO-ONE can get citizenship! (if they even wanted it) The best you can get here is permanent residence...

Random has a good point. Even though most Canadians are open to immigration; exactly who gets stuck with the bill. Tax time is coming. The unemployment rate in the resource rich provinces is up which means fewer tax dollars to pay for people in a country with high unemployment.

Remember folks, it's not just a job offer you have to have. The salary requirements differ depending on how many kids you have. If, like me, you have one and one on the way then you are looking at having to find a job that will pay you 25k GBP stright off the bat. That's not the easiest thing to do. Alternatives are having a certain amount of money in your bank account for six months before you apply (in my case 51k GBP) or setting up your own business first and making the money that way. It ain't easy and we have been working on it for quite some time. (had it all lined up and ready to go until, bang, pregnant again)

I understand why the rules were put into place but it really has made things difficult for us.

No problems in Australia. ...unfortunately we let anybody in.
Even when the Government says we don't.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
