It is almost the turn of the decade and people are getting all reflective and maybe even nostalgic if and where nostalgia is due. So my questions are:
What was your favourite movie of the 2010s?
Favourite book?
For the former question, my answer is 'The Irishman'. If it is too fresh in the memory to count, then 'Blue Jasmine' or 'Inside Llewyn Davies'.
For the latter, fiction 'The Incarnations' by Susan Barker, non-fiction 'Sapiens' by Yuval Noah Harari.

HK protest ... is in high light of the several decades, IMO. I am following it almost daily over u-Tube and remembering living in the city during my teaching stint in China.
'I Heard You Paint Houses' by Charles Brandt is my next read ... after I watched 'The Irishman' last week, which is based on the same book. I am not too impressed by the movie. Great cast, but nothing more than that.
Title of the book doesn't have anything to do with the house painting. It means 'I heard you are the hitman' in mob's language, i.e. ''once somebody's getting shot in the house, walls get splattered by ... the 'paint''.
I will audiobook 'Sapiens'. I read about book's recommendation by the poster on Zero.

If you started watching Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman" on Netflix last week but didn't finish it, you're in good company.
According to Bloomberg just 18% of the 13.2 million viewers who tuned in actually finished the 3 1/2-hour gangster epic starting Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Ray Romano, Harvey Keitel and Joe Pesci.

I'll might get an extra pint from Pres., when he comes around ...

I was just reading online comments about the Greta / Time thing.
Lol people like to get themselves worked up and outraged over trivial things. Every time they announce person of the year people scream and rant about it because 'what about ____, he/she deserves it much more and all _____ did was ____ and now I'm never going to buy Time again.'

Yeah, Trump-a had to stop-by and stick-it-to-the-China-dish. This was the funniest. Sometimes he behaves like he's selling stuff on outdoor market ...
The main point of all this would be 'Trade war is just in its infancy ...'. The problem is 'Real war generally always follows ...'.

Noo, he isn't ... considering his history .. his inherited everything, he manage it well.
But, this tweeting thingy gets "out-of-the ... I'd say, '-POTUS posture", here and there.
I am sure, he has gazillion handlers and advisors, not different than any other pres. What are they doing, I want to know. It looks like they are all scarred to loose a job/position, so they better shut their gobblers and look the other way.
IMO, Greta above didn't write that reply without an advisor. She is handled well.

Surprise! Greta Thunberg BIOPIC reveals cameras were rolling from day one of her 'viral' rise
Teenage environmental activist Greta Thunberg is the subject of a forthcoming documentary film – made by a crew that has followed her since the early days of her school strike. Still believe her rise to fame was an accident?

Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old environmentalist who started skipping school in 2018 to protest outside the Swedish parliament, has long been promoted a special needs teen whose tireless mission to shame the west into cap-and-trade went 'viral' organically.

The Stones live in concert? Is ol' Jagger still on stage? Jeez, I musta seen them 30 yrs ago.... even then I was too young to appreciate a bunch of old guys rockin' it,,,, wow,, but now I must say I'm impressed,,, sh*t, some of them must be 80ish~
I don’t have any favorite memories; they all suck equally.
Novel: 'The Fault in Our Stars' - J. Green,,,, heck of a book,, real tear jerker though,,, bring tissue...
Movies: I gave up watchin' movies probably 20 yrs ago,,,, new I mean,,, but I just finished DeMilles '10 Commandments' for maybe the 10th time the other night. Yul Brenner and De Carlo friggin' rocked it. Still, my favorite flicks are: Sophie's Choice ; Lolita (original) ; Gone with The Wind ; Spartacus ; The Sands of Iwo Jima.
*edit; how could I leave out 'A Clockwork Orange',,, now that is a trippy flick ~
'come and take one in the yarballs!,,, that is if you got any yarballs!'
icnif77:
I know Yul ... he was boldie .. ... detective, if I remember right ..
No, detective was Telly Savalas .. 'ella malaka ...'/Greek. Yul&Telly, they were both boldies, he he.
I usually stay far away from ancient movies ...'cause ... Few days ago, I watched 'The Third Man' produced in 1949.. with Orson Walles. It was horror to watch it over MacBook and I deleted shortly.
Today's tech doesn't comply with ancient movies that good.
diverdude1:
yeah,,, some guys can rock the Chrome Dome look,,, and Yul and Telly were 2 of them.... yeah,, old movies take some getting used to,,, it seems the whole ethos of the art form was different back then... like they were trying to bring a novel to life,, whereas nowadays they are seeking to 'entertain'... like now is more about trying to achieve a visceral impact vs. oldies who were into the cerebral stimulation.
Watching Dr. Zhivago now,,,, darn that is a powerful movie... Julie Christie ate that role alive! the 3 guys certainly did their parts justice,,, but it feels like Julie Christie actually became Lara....
I know there have been some good movies but off the top of my head I can't think of a single one. If someone rattled off a list I'd probably say 'oh yeah, that was awesome..'
Books, same thing really. I have just started reading America Before, by Graham Hancock. I heard him talking about it on a podcast and bought the book. So far so good.
I think if I'm still around in 20 years of so I'll look back on this last 10 years as the time when everything started to spiral out out control and get downright trippy.
The effects of climate change and pollution got to the point where it's obvious something huge is going on, even if we're still squabbling about the causes of it. Our lives are being run by our smart phones so it's like we're in an 80s sci fi movie. We're outraged and offended by almost everything and go online to tell everyone about it now. People around the world are pushing back against the status quo - Trumpism seems like the strangest manifestation of that but there are anti govt riots happening in various parts of the world. People are starting to rebel against science - vaccines are bad now and the earth is flat. And there's the social media trend where everyone is obsessed with taking selfies and doing stupid things like eating tide pods for attention.
It all seems like the backdrop for another Orwell book to me.
diverdude1:
I thought I knew what 'stupid' was,,, until I heard about that Tide Pod thing.... wow,,,, makes me and my friends in our teen days look downright sensible. I still wonder if those kids (pod kids) are really just trolling Social Media,, seeing how dumb we r to fall for their lie,, or if some of them really did consume a pod filled w/ caustic chemicals??
