I don't know if changing your passport would work, I doubt it but who knows.

If you were planning to come back and work though, you'd probably be out of luck anyway. See the recent threads about non-native speakers.

Stiggs:

Ah, just saw your other question here, you're a student.

Regardless, I don't think you'll be able to return to China before the five years is up.

It's touchy subject! Nobody ever talks about it, so who could really know, if cops would let you back a year earlier.

I'd say, if they said 5 years, don't even try a day earlier.

Is weed bad?

Kevin, I don't know if it's possible to reduce the time until you can return to China.

If you wanted to appeal the decision you should probably get a lawyer and go from there.

icnif77:

That decision is without 'appeal', i.e. final. Take it and leave it!

I'd say, they get you for something else and 'weed' was just a final cause.

Yep icnif is most likely right.

Sorry to say it Kevin but I think you need to put your China plan on hold for five years, or figure out something else.

Did you find out more about if you can go to Taiwan?

Kevin876:

They wrote on the letter you can appeal with on 60 days but one can appeal if they are inside china and one of my friend in Tsinghua university he told me its very expensive to hire a lawyer in Beijing.

Stiggs, my case wasn't that strong. i dont know when they put me in the detention centre after that the situation changed, i dont know what happened but before the immigration officer told me that your case is not serious and will not cancel your student visa. as you are a PhD student. so .... everything is gone now..

for Taiwan i applied there to many universities and i am waiting for the result now. I hope i can get a chance. Now the problem in Taiwan is they don't have diplomatic relation with my country pakistan. i am just worried if they cancel my visa. now i have my new passport which dont have previous record. i hope i can get it now.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
