one cannot work in China as a "freelancer". Your working visa to work he legally will be tied to your employer who gets you the visa.

First step to successful freelancing: Don't substitute numbers for words. From the "Freelancing in China Handbook by B.S. Atcha (2007, Larper/Jollins, Chapter 3, pg 7):"

"Remember, Chinese culture is 5,000 years old, and hence, adheres greatly to established rules of grammar and sentence structure, frowning on the abbreviation or "textualization" of the written language. In order to show respect for established etiquette, all freelancers in China should become familiar with normative word spellings and traditional phraseology."

You can't even if you register yourself as a legal business entity. That is because to renew your work permit, you will need to employ a Chinese person and have at least two months worth of workers insurance receipts. So technically, unless you work illegally on the wrong type of visa, you can't do it.
