Q: How can you justify keeping your young child in China?

We all know what's been going on, but can't talk about it. So I ask this question

At the risk of sounding stupid, what is going on?

I mean, there are always several somethings going on but was there something specific you meant?

No need to go into details if it's sensitive, just an idea..

Oh, that.

Yeah there's always something new to freak out parents.

Milk, baby formula, food, water, pollution, kidnapping, abuse in schools, knife attacks at schools, quality of education...

If you have the option it's obviously better to raise your kids somewhere else.

China has lots of problems, but so does everywhere. It seems a bit naive to imagine that escape is possible.

Because she is Chinese. Simple as that.

She can be British if she wants.

But she wants to be Chinese.

Good enough for me.

And consider the biligual aspect. My 6 year old speaks Mandarin, cantonese, and english. The kids from mixed families who I know who 'escaped' to the west.... only English.

I would revert the question.

Why the fuck would anyone with the luck to have a kid here want to tear the kid away from a muti lingual society to a racist sexist fucked up world where she is seen as an outsider

"a racist ,sexist fucked up world that sees people as outsiders".

You reckon there's none of that in China then?

Leaving aside the pollution and the dodgy milk, vaccines, food, water. medicine etc...

My main reason for not wanting to raise kids in China if I had the choice would be that I think kids have a crap life in China.

I've seen it first hand. When school finishes they are rushed to their after school classes then back home to spend the evening studying and doing homework.

When they get a bit older, approaching middle school age they have almost literally no life outside of school and homework. The kids are tired constantly, stay up until late at night doing homework and become like zombies. It's not uncommon to see kids with hair going grey - I assume from the stressful life they lead.

When they get to the age where they are preparing for some of the big make or break tests in their school life - gaokao being one of them - life is hell for them.

All this for an education that, as far as I can see, isn't that good.

When I was a kid I would finish school a bit after 3pm then would be down the beach surfing with my mates, or working after school for pocket money, or playing sports, falling off my BMX, hanging around in video arcades with friends, fishing and swimming in the river etc. Normal kid stuff. Weekends would be more of the same, or hunting / fishing with Dad.

Kids in China don't get to have that childhood. If you ask a Chinese school kid what their hobbies are there's a  good chance they'll say studying, homework or whatever musical instrument they're made to learn and that they hate. The idea of hobbies - interests you pursue just isn't that common in China.
