I saw that Ambi. I have no time for the guy after he insulted the brit cave rescue guy. I suspect his whole enterprise is a massive pyramid scheme. This new Shanghai plant will bite China on its arse.
If you have property in China it will be much easier for you to get a long term residency in China. Also, if you are married to a local you can file for a family visa.
There is no such a thing as a "family" visa, but one of the "purposes" to request a tourist visa "L" is to visit your family.
And also, one thing is a "Residence Permit" and another thing is a "Resident Visa".
A Residence Permit is issued by PSB in China, to those foreigners who come to China on different types of visa, and it is normally given for a period of one year. With an "L" visa, you can obtain a residence permit if you are married to a local Chinese, and it would allow you to live in China without needing to exit for the period granted. Normally, after having a residence permit for one year, you can request one for two years and it should be granted, technically they could be granted for a s much as 5 years, but I only heard of Ex-Pats having a maximum of two years.
A Resident Visa is rarely granted, only to those who at least invest a minimum of 1/2 million US dollars in China, or have made great contributions to China, or the managers of new factories opening in China. A resident Visa will allow you to live in China without time limits or renewals.
happyExpat is correct in most all of his comment. The family visa can be changed into a Resident visa but it doesn't give one the right to work with out an FEC.
The long term R visa can be given to a marriage partner if you own a house, have financial stability and have resided in China for at least 8 years without any porblems. It's elusive and is usually given to women instead of men unless you are from an Asian Country.
My friend from England was just given his 10 year perm. Resident visa along with a temp. houkou but he owns a house, has been married for 15 years and has always had a legitimate job including now, but again he still has to have a FEC to work.
Not to say I care about the FEC just stating the facts. If you are caught working on a L family visa, be prepared for trouble for you and your family.

I think I read on this forum or on the regular echinaciteis, but that one also has to be careful about sources of income. This guy, who had sold a book a few years ago was living off the royalties. Anyway, the PSB did an indepth investigation until they were satisfied that his "income" did indeed come from a book he had already written and was being paid for from the West . Apparently if he had written the book in China even tough it was sent by email and publishe in the West, he wouldhave been in trouble.
Oh yeah, the half million is US dollars, and it has to be invested inside a Chinese company
Money, marriage, house and long-term financial stability. The long-term residence is 10 years and you must show proof of marriage to a citizen, house and long term capability to support yourself while you are here. Or invest about 500k US dollars into a company or China's economy, but this doesn't always work. Like the millioniare who was forced to go home during the olympics and had already invested about 2 million into China.
