is there a foreign language Department in your university?

there might be an English Corner you can go to, or there could be foreign students there.

Go to local coffee shops, fast food places.

in Beijing there should be plenty of foreigners to meet.

do not go up to a foreigner and say "will you be my friend" and ask for their contact numbers. this is creepy. Wait until you know them better, for your own safety as well.

Be natural and research online about the differences in foreign cultures - we are not all Americans.

NOTE: foreign TV is not real life.

I suppose the thing not to do is to sit in your room thinking about it.

The thing to do is to get out there and meet people.  Contrary to popular belief normal people go to bars etc.  Hit the bars and swap wechats.  And no, you don't need to be a drinker. Go to where live music is performed and you will meet loads of ordinary people who are out for the music and to meet people/enjoy themselves.

And try not to think of people as foreigners.  You are living in a major world metropolis. If you come across as a world citizen you will be accepted into any group or social circle. But if you come across as someone just looking for "foreigners" then you will probably be shunned.

Good luck and have fun wink

Check Beijing expat websites for activities you could get involved in...  some, or maybe most cities (am sure Beijing would be one of them) have any number of foreigners looking to meet people and do fun things. Badminton, movie nights, language exchange, ping pong, KTV, sports, poetry evenings, cooking lessons.... that type of thing.

Go on The Beijinger website. Set up a language exchange with someone in the classified section.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
